I have a 1996 Ducati 900SS and on some photos I have seen , there is a rod from the Rear Brake Caliper to the engine. There isn't one fitted on mine ? Did Ducati delete it so only on earlier models or has previous owner removed it . Thanks.
If it's supposed to be there it wouldn't work without it so they must have removed it and fixed the calliper carrier locally like on later Ducati's
I think you've seen pictures of the Superlight rear brake set up. There is a torque bar to the crankcase and the caliper was a floating type.
Thanks guys, I thought the rear brake set up was the same on SS and SL. Does anyone have a 1996 900SS with a rod fitted ? When I google image 900SS of the hundreds of photos about 50% show the rod.
Hi Rob in Oz, thanks for sharing photo looks the same as mine but with reaction bar fitted ,however graphics on fairing are different ? Are they non standard or is mine not a 1996 model ? Can anyone confirm, here's a pic of mine.
Hi Iguana Haven't had mine very long, but I believe the graphics are as per original. I not your fairing is different, not having the air scoops feeding the rear cylinder. To check on your year of manufacture, have a look at the VIN plate... Here's mine, although this is an Australian delivered bike, I'd assume your bike would have a similar plate in the same place:
Lucky me! We probably need all the cooling air we can get in an Aussie summer. Perhaps the reaction rod is also a later model feature?
Hi Rob, mine must be an early 96 model, I have found out there are 2 types of rear brake, mine has an anti-rotation peg in the caliper mounting bracket where yours uses the rod to stop rotation. Nice looking bike by the way !
I think you will find that there are three types of rear brake mounting on the carbed SSsss....... As far as I am aware, the Superlight (SL) always had the floating caliper with the torque/torsion rod......The caliper mounting plate was roughly an inverted Y shape. It seems at the same time there was also the 'SP' 900SS which had the same set-up.....what the other differences are between the SP and the plain and ordinary Desmodue 900SS, I don't have a clue. Many people have retro fitted the set-up to their SSsss, including 750s. While the SP and SL versions were around, the plain old Desmodue 900SS had an overslung caliper on what looked like a Y with a slotted leg off one side.........that slot engaged on a retaining pin in the swing arm. These more basic fixed (non floating) mounting plates can be found on the 750, 600 and 400 SSss as well. And then there is what you seem to have........an inverted version of the overslung one.
Mines a '94 900ss with the caliper above the swingarm no torque/reaction rod, it's staying that way I don't use the rear brake that much.
With a spare kit to measure as a pattern, I have no doubt a friendly engineer with a CNC laser cutter could knock out a complete new kit in aluminium for significantly less than the amount in the link above.
I don't know but how much more braking is needed from the rear? I've never needed more, it holds me on hills at junctions fine. I think it's more of a bling thing more modern look. You used to be able to get aluminium rear discs for weight saving I can't believe they lasted long or were that good. You could always put HH pads in. Just my thoughts.
