916/996/998 range next bike suggestions...

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by THJ, Aug 16, 2013.

  1. Just had my Vrod written off by a fiesta driver that sideswiped me & sped off!

Silver cloud means I have about 6 grand to add another bike. I already have a 1098s Tricolore & a 749r.

I'm thinking of something from the 916/996/998 range. I want something that will hold its value and be in decent condition. Price could be significantly lower or possibly slightly higher than the 6 grand mark.

Any suggestions on the different variants, models and special editions from the 916/996/998 range that could be in my budget range and the merits/cons etc...

I do keep lusting over the MV Augusta F4, but keep thinking I do actually get one I will still want a 916/996/998.

  4. What about a nice 748R Homologation bike, full Ohlins Model, got all the goodies and wont depreciate any time soon. Its a stunning bike in the flesh. This would be my choice for sure. Well it is because I own one :upyeah:

  14. So why do I keep looking at prices and thinking I could put a 916 in my garage and it'd be a useable bike that should actually increase in value over the next 5 years?

I suppose it's the same brain cells that tell me to touch something to find out if it's too hot to pick up

  15. As an engineer, I dont touch things to see if they're too hot. I rely upon the radiant heat emission to sense if its too hot. Call me old fashioned like.

  16. Not enough side vents. Everyone knows a good suit needs good side vents. Where would Jimmy be without the 5" side vents in his zoot suit?

  17. I've got paint markers that tell me the temperature of things but that doesn't mean I don't touch them. I've only been an engineer for 38 years and I'm seriously beginning to doubt that I'll ever stop using my fingers to check for sharp edges but they've toughened up nicely over the years so I don't need to use masking tape on them as often as I used to

  18. I have 996 for sale so 996 the best

  19. Well i was in a similar position a few months back, not that anything was written off, but i had about 6k in my back pocket to go towwards another bike. Ive already got a 94 ZXR750L2, a 96 VFR750 and a highly tuned 1999 R1. I used to have a brand new 2000 748S back in 2000 so got it in my head now that prices are good to get a 996 which is what i really wanted back in 2000 but it was out of my price range. So hunting about and you start seeing MV Agusta 750`s up for just a shade over 4k... very tempting.

In the end i bought a really nice 2000 model 996 bip for £3900. Within 4 days id dropped £700 on it (id budgeted for this when i bought it) on chain, sprockets, brake pads, oil, oil filter, fuel filter, belts, single seat conversion, spark plugs, paddock stand etc. I did all the work myself, had i taken it to ducati it would have been like a grand more than that. It didnt actually need all those bits but i like to make sure when i get a bike i do everything so i know exactly where I am.

For me, the bike is awesome. So much power, noise, braking power. Very happy so far and it stands me at £4600. I dont see it dropping too much more than that.
