Hello new to the forum and have just made my introduction.I have just entered the 916 world and have a few questions that have prob been asked several times before but I cant find in search function. The bike is a 1998 916 biposta,it says 916s on frame.I intend respraying bike as its currently not original.I want to order full decal kit from imageworks but am unsure what to order as I dont know what bike should look like.I see a 1998 bike for sale in a dealers and it has the large font ducati decal but I thought the later 916 had the smaller font. Also I need to get wheels and sub frame sprayed, are they the same colour?Rs bike paint have frame and wheels down as satin bronze,is this correct?Sorry to start off with so many questions but I m eager to get cracking on this bike and to start using it as it was intended.Regards Gene
Hy Gene I expected some real experts to wade in on this but until they turn up..... Relative newbie myself with a newly acquired 1998 916 Bip. Mine was said to be "original" but you never can tell. Wheels and frame are the same gold/ bronze colour. No decal on the tank. Smallish DUCATI decal on the upper side panels and small font Ducati 916 decal on the rear seal panel sides. Hope this helps. Ginge
Thats lovely Ginge thats what my bike will hopefully look like when I m finished.I got a rear seat cowl from red998 on this forum and can highly recommend one,it just slots in instead of rear saddle and really looks the part and if you want to bring a passenger its a 10 min job to put saddle back on.Very well made and top man to deal with.1998 must have been the 1st year of new style decals so and the 98 one I saw for sale in dealers may not be original. Thanks for help Ginge.
That is nice daisy the big question is did any 98 916 bikes have those decals leaving the factory?I ve heard stories of these bikes being assembled with whatever parts were available on any given day so maybe there are no definitive years/models.As I am respraying mine I can have any decal layout I choose but would not like to put earlier design decals on if they were never on any 98 bikes.
This one is fairly specific being the "Ducati Campione Del Mondo Superbike". I find the "normal" ones rather bare looking. Don't know if this model carried over into 1998 or not.
As far as I know all the 1997 Bipostos had the same decals as yours on the tank, fairing and seat units, mine certainly did. The Cagiva style decals disappeared in 98 when the TPG cash arrived, although I think my 98SPS was built before the cash was in the bank as it (same as all the other 1998 916 (996) SPS machines) has no decals on the tank and just a small "new" Ducati Logo on each side of the fairing. I wasn't too happy with the minimal labels for a start and considered putting the Cagiva style ones on it, but I quickly got used to them and prefer the stealth look now. You have to read the small print on the seat unit if you don't know what it is. IMO my 97 Biposto looked even nicer with the addition of red mirrors.
Yes, was thinking of doing the mirrors red as mine have a scuff on the right one thanks to the wet steel deck of the Dun Laoghaire-Holyhead ferry............... :Arghh: I got a bit of standard Ducati red to try and it was orange compared to the original. Further investigation revealed that the "Anniversary Red" is a 3 coat colour, red base, a translucent red over that and lacquer over that............ RS Paints do it but just haven't got around to progressing it. Need to rebuild the entire knackered top end first.
My 1998 916 Bip (slightly modded, I have all OEM parts). It never had any stickers on the tank. Only the one on the fairing. Plus the Dr Desmo is painted under the lacquer of the front fairing. Was like this when I got it. All fairings are OEM except tail unit which is GRP.
I have no idea @duke63 it was an ebay purchase that everyone missed. What I can say is its very high quality and very thin and light. I'll be taking the front wheel off tonight whilst I complete my radial conversion and i'll see if theres a label. But I never noted one when i got it.
All the CF on the 916 is top notch. Ill shove any old shit on the 1198 though. I even have the DP air tubes. Another ebay purchase for £125 that everyone missed. I'm still gutted i missed a MS Prod airbox for £55..
My 916 was dyno'd with these on. Full Monty by Snells, PCIII, full 50mm system @114bhp. Now I have no proof of these figures as I cant find the printout AND dyno figures are somewhat unreliable AND i had my doubts when he told me. BUt it does spin up cleanly and smoothly and the Snells mech, i forget his name, Tom or Paul, said its one of the nicest and tightest he'd ridden.
I have the BMC filters on my 916 due to having carbon tubes with no filters. Bike made 118hp & 71lb/ft after a bit of fettling. The only thing I will say is a downside is that they are quite small and so need to be cleaned fairly regularly but due to the fitment it's an easy job, just requiring the tank off.
