916 916 Fairings

  1. I've not been able to find the answer via a search on this forum but i assume it has been covered many times over and i probably already know the answer ;-)

I have seen a Yellow 1998 916, the owner sent me some photos of the inner parts of the panels and in some areas there seems to be red coming through and some yellow over spray on a black 'rubber' on the fairing. The bike does look genuine looking at the silver stickers under the seat one of the areas of the rub through.. Is this a fairly common thing to find and did Ducati just re-paint red panels yellow?

Edit/ on closer inspection the rear seat unit seems to also have an ink stamp Alimote 35 or Allmonte 35

    Thanks
    Mark

  2. I'm too rusty in that area, but seem to remember that it was the other way round at some point - i.e. yellow was the base coat under all red bikes.

Bottom line though, surely if you can see overspray on any item other than the fairings then it's not factory paint anyway.
If someone knows different to this then would like to hear.

  3. Mine is just red. No other colour showing through anywhere.

  4. My 98 916 is red throughout, no yellow. Nor on basecoat.

  5. I've heard that the factory did paint yellow ones up as red ones in that period with a shortage of supply etc.

  6. how do you know it doesn't have a yellow basecoat? has it ever got scratched through to expose it Boots?

  7. It has often be claimed that the factory resprayed a batch of red panels around that time and given their parts bin engineering philosophy, I’d not be surprised if it was true. Andy

  8. One fairing looks like it has 18/03/91 or 97 97 would tally up to the 1 Aug 98 First reg date.. Has anyone seen these markings/stamps/writing on panels before?

  9. seat unit patina looks convincing and almost certainly factory and a good confirmation that yellow on red was carried out. Not sure about the side fairing though.

EDIT - i think it is my memory.. right the first time - RED was the more common (factory) base coat, yellow then applied on top at that time period.

  11. Ive owned it since 1999. I scratched, sorry chipped the end of tank with an allen literally days after getting it. Right by twhere tank bolts down. Gutted. Then I gouged the fairing on lhs accidently. Nether show any signs of the dreaded yellow peril.

  12. The OE bodywork of my 1999 996 was factory painted yellow over red.
