The obvious route is putting an 1198 engine into my 748, however this is beyond what I can do so I'd have to pay someone and I'm not sure nelly at Cornerspeed wants a project yet , so how about putting a 996 tank and bodywork on an 1198 ?, anyone seen it done, the dimensions are similar and it must be easier to mod a tank to fit the 1198 than swap the motor and I'd get the reliability of a complete modern bike with the classic looks.
oh dear…..youve not quite worked this one through have you... you have a 748 you don't have an 1198………..by the time you bought the 1198 you could of paid someone to do the 1198 conversion……with change
I fully expect some 'nice' replies it would have course have 748 stickers on it too, I loved the power of my 1198s and much preferred it to my 1199, I then prefer the looks of my 748 so it makes sense to me to combine the 2....
i know the side fairing mounting points are different…….what would you do there cut and weld the mountings on the frame…. im not so sure that the angle of the bottom of the tank complies with the shape of the front of the frame either…..and then there is the air box clearance….the alignment of the side fairings to the nose fairing and clearance for the headlight area and the lock to lock…..you never know but there are a lot of variables…..
Yup as I was thinking, I'll wait to see if anyone has done it, then go buy an engine and deliver it to Cornerspeed lol
bit of a combination 999r 104mm bore with a 1098 crank =1099cc…….in true rolls royce fashion power is adequate…. the 999/998 engine is an easier fix as its all ducati parts really………as soon as you go eve engine 1098 1198 then there are air box and exhaust issues (that are now easy to overcome, i believe there is a chap sells the air box mod.)…..however its newer and more power.. oh 748R frame is easier too….and obviously 748R stickers!
Seems to be feasible to throw the bigger motor into the old chassis according to google. Stumbling block appears to be the need to hand make an airbox. Conversion airbox for 1098/1198 in 916/996 chassis - ducati.org forum | the home for ducati owners and enthusiasts
Sounds like an absolute money pit waiting to happen. If you like the looks of a 748, why not just but a 748SPS or 748R, leave it standard and enjoy it. It'll be fast enough for 99% of the time.
I just couldn't bring myself to butcher my 916 or my 1198. However should shit happen, and it invariably does this would be a fun project.
Depends how quick you are on a bike. A well ridden 1098 will be quicker than similarly well ridden 748sp. And couchy can ride a bike pretty well. confession, I like the idea of a **8 chassis with 1198 lump, and when Cranker has done his I will be having a go back to back with my Gixer.
Yeah, I kind of get his thinking about having modern performance with classic looks. It just seemed like an expensive thing to do. But hey, we've all probably spent far too much on bikes over the years. If that's what he wants, then go for it
It's not about lap times, I do enjoy a lower powered bike at times but there something about a lot of power, fighting the power wheelies and the occasional slide when you get it right out the corners is great fun
Wasn't there a white one on Upube? Some Americano had taken a 1098/1198 and fitted 916 plastics on? Could be I'm confused....I'm 94 ya know!
