916 Lower Fairing/ Belly Pan Removal

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Unrapid, Mar 31, 2024.

  1. Hi all,

I've tried to work this out myself but after much fretting about damaging the lower panel I felt I should ask here for some pointers!

How on earth is the lower fairing panel/belly pan removed? There are no Zeus fasteners on the bottom of the belly pan, but neither does it want to split at what seems to be a join between the left and right panels.

Should I remove the tiny (1.5mm?) hex fasteners that join the lower and upper fairing?

Sorry to ask a question about such a basic thing, but I dont want to damage the carbon belly pan by inadvertently forcing something.

    Many thanks,

    DH

  2. It's a long time since I had a 916, but are they small hex fasteners or pop-rivets?

  3. Unless the lower fairings have been riveted on, they appear (though hard to tell from your photo) to be small dome head torx bolts, look to be the same as the ones used on the windscreen, in which case there will be rubber wellnuts on the inside. If so they can easily be removed but you would have to remove the side fairings as one piece, to be able to hold the wellnuts whilst you undo the torx bolts.

  4. As above the side pieces come off in one piece , 2 zeus fasteners under neath to split the 2 sides then remove the Zeus fasteners from the top edge off the side panels , it at least that's how it was on my 916 and is on my 996

  5. As said, you will be able to get your hand behind the panel and confirm the "rubbery" wellnut.

it's a one-piece belly pan Ivor - no fixings underneath.

  6. 20200703_152739 (1).jpg The rivets look like this so they're hex bolts for sure.!

  7. you are a brave man in this "day and age" Peter. Here is a picture of a (non-std!) break-stem rivet.

  8. Very nice but would DuCatI use those rather more expensive ones in production over the more basic ones.

  9. ...i could be wrong, but fairly certain that the above bellypan is aftermarket?

  10. I think you are correct Chris, my memory does not recall a carbon belly pan. Andy

  11. Ah, my bad, sorry, assumed

  12. Agreeing with @Chris - could it be a one piece aftermarket belly pan?
Take a photo of the bottom of it to see if there are any fasteners al8ngg the centreline where an OEM pan would join.

  13. Thanks for everyones replies. The belly pan is aftermarket, so it may well be one piece. Guess I'll need to remove the 1.5mm hex bolts that fix it to the upper fairing.

  14. but can you check and be sure. it would be really odd for it to be one piece

  15. Not if aftermarket and carbon. Every one I have seen is one piece.
