916 No Spark

  1. I'm after some ideas please.
I have a sudden and unexplained lack of sparks on my 916.
I try and be brief but some unlikely things are happening. Started the bike last night. I noticed the fuel pump wasn't priming so switched it off and on and I had prime and it started right up.
This morning I had no fuel pump prime. Started to investigate and was able to isolate the fault, however unlikely, to a faulty wire between the relay and the connector which plugs into the tank. No visible damage but infinite resistance. So I rigged up a new loom and all is well. Pump primes for the requisite 2 seconds and then also when it cranks. I expected it to fire straight up but no. Nothing.
Checked for sparks and, sure enough, I don't have any.
Seems a big coincidence that 2 things should go wrong at the same time.
I'm thinking crank sensor. I can check that at some point tomorrow as I need some resistors to rig up a test for it.
First question is this. What resistance should the crank sensor have between signal and ground?
Second question. Can you think of another reason I lost my sparks. I did look after them, honest Sir, I wasn't careless but they just disappeared
    Many thanks in advance.

  2. The pump, coils and injector all get their 12v feed from the ignition relay, all the same circuit. I’d check for that 12v feed first.

  3. I have just found out where I went wrong and you're absolutely right. I had power coming from the relay but not arriving at the fuel pump. So I disconnected that feed and connected a new feed directly to the fuel pump, assuming that is all it feeds. By doing that I now don't have power to ignition and injectors. Should have done a bit if reading first.
    Cheers for that, much appreciated

  4. I spliced a new pump feed into the loom after I connected the old feed back up and it fired straight up.

  5. The exact same thing happened to me a few years back , very far from home , with only a Leatherman for a toolkit .
I have absolutely no idea why this sort of crap happens with older Ducati wiring looms .
Perhaps they are made of cheese ..... like some of the bolts ?

I did exactly the same fix as yourself .
Did the repair look pretty ? ...... No , it did not .
    Do I give a f**k ? ......
    ...... take a wild guess

    :):D:cool:

  6. At 28 years old I don't complain. I may dismantle the loom this winter and repair it properly but then again, if it's ok now I might not repair what isn't broken.
