916 Senna Front Brake Problems.

  1. Hi, in need of help.
I have a 916 Senna that I purchased many years ago, this bike has been stored most of its life in a warm dry garage in France, in fact it has only done 2500 miles from new. I have now decided to get it back to the UK and get it's MOT done. Much to my surprise it failed due to worn bobbins on the disk! The bike has never been wet or kept in a wet environment therefore no corrosion, I really don't see how this can happen when the bike has only done 2500 miles. Yes I do have play on the disk but no more that when the bike was new, I was told this was a floating disk should move.
Anyone else had the same problem? If so, what did you do!

  2. Have you tried freeing them up with the bolt/ brake cleaner method?

  3. Take it to a ducati specialist and get a second opinion my friend:upyeah:

  4. Take it to someone who knows what they are doing

  5. Hi, Thanks for responding. The bobbins are not seized, the look like new and all rotate freely.

  6. My mate had the same issues with early triumph.... to much float in discs! Only to find out they are fully floating and supposed to be that loose... check first please. Worst case scenario you can replace the bobbins separately as I've done this before on an early Yamaha YZF750... it's not a bad job to do and certainly a lot cheaper than complete disc replacement if there's lots of life left in the disc itself.... hope that helps

  7. How much radial movement is there?

  8. Thanks for that info, Yes they are fully floating so taking the bike to a Ducati service centre next week to see if they think the same.

  9. Virtually no radial movement, only top to bottom rocking movement. Brakes work fine with no vibration.

  10. Virtually no radial movement at all.

  11. Yep, think your right. Will try that next week.

  12. Sounds like an MOT tester who does not realise that floating discs are meant to float.
I'm sure it will pass at a proper garage.

  14. Maybe there is an issue with the caliper pistons not pushing/retracting as they should and the MOT tester misunderstood this? I cannot how could there be an issue with the rotors as long as the bobbins are free and only 2500 miles from new.
TBH after so many years of sitting probably should have had a full fluid service and rubber seals replaced?

  15. The tester is more likely to be concerned with radial movement than lateral movement.

  16. Interesting comment, the MOT tester wasn't questioning the performance of the front brake, just the lateral movement in the floating disk!

  17. Fins motorcycles in redhill, pass my 916 every year with no problems:upyeah:

  18. Thanks to all you guys that sent me information regarding my Senna 916 Ducati and the play on the front brakes not passing it's MOT. I thought you may be intrested to know that I took the bike to a Ducati service centre today and it passed it's MOT with no problem. They told me that nothing was wrong with the play in the disks, they are fully floating disks and should have movement. Lesson learnt, take a Ducati to a Ducati dealer for all work including MOT.

  19. It might be worth mentioning it to the previous mot station you went to.
