The Battery is fully charged but bike slow to turn over. Starter? or something else, solenoid, wiring, anyone help.
I would just start by cleaning all the leads particularly the earth to the engine and see how you go from there. Steve
light a fire under it and see if this helps. be careful re sprag clutch though.could a battery loose its cold crank capabilities ? just a thought. ps don't light a fire under it.
I fitted heavy-duty starter cables on mine, made it spin over much better, Motobatt battery also an improvement over the Yuasa.
Motobatt and upgraded cables here on my 996 and it always spins like a goodun. More than likely the battery is shagged but the starter cables are so undersized from new.
Heavy duty starter cables will do the trick - see my post in the ST section ( I left the original cables in place & doubled up ) Made a huge difference
An old thread but might still be available. He does say he will make for other models. for sale : ducati starter cable upgrade (ducati 851,888,748,916,996,998,749,999,1098, Steve PS just checked on e-bay, still available £24+post.
I upgraded both the 998 and MTS1200 battery and starter cables. They are crap as standard, way undersized. Using a decent analogue meter measure the battery voltage during start. A digital one will not give a good reading unless its really expensive. The voltage should be around 11-12V during start, if you see 10 something Volts or lower the battery is shot (lost cold crank ability).
CPC batteries in Kingston, just off the A3 before tolworth, take first left after then cap in hand roundabout (above yer head on A3), going into town. CPC can be found on the righthand side in an industrial estate after about 1/2 a mile. They sell every sort of vehicle connector. Great people and I've always used them for all my high current needs. They will make up the leads for you.
What he said. I don't know if the setup is exactly the same as the SS ie, but then I cleaned up my earth cables I noticed the earthing point in the engine is a bolt in. When I removed the bolt on boss there was extensive evidence of poor earthing between the boss and the crank case. I cleaned the boss, it's mating surface on the cases and smothered it in silicone grease. I then cleaned the earth cable and its mating face on the boss, smothering those in silicone grease as well. The engine span over notably better after this, especially when hot. I now have a motobatt battery as well, and it starts like a champ, hot or cold. Silicone grease is in fact an insulator, when you tighten everything down wiggle the leads as you tighten them. The metal on metal contact will exclude the grease and give a good connection but even a microscopic coating of silicone will inhibit corrosion and maintain a good connection. Clean and re apply every two years when you change cam belts as part of a major service.
I second this - first class help and massive stock. Got my Yuasa for Elefant from there around 2 months ago and they matched my best 'online' price.
