Hi, I'm doing a sssa conversion on my 959, I've got a swingarm from a 1199 and a hub and spindle from a 1098 which I've been told will fit and the part numbers seem to be the same too. Has anyone else done this conversion and if so what parts did they use to do it. Cheers Steve.
Will your swing arm fit your crankcases ? Just asking as a mate of mine is just starting a custom build using an older style 900SS engine & 916 sssa. We've noticed that some crankcases are obviously wider at the rear where the swingarms mount. The bosses can be machined down to suit swingarms, but it's just something to bear in mind.
I used an 1199 rear swinger, hub, axle, calliper and Galfer wavey disc (1199 spec) on mine. It (SSSA)bolted straight in to my 899. However the rear shock lengths are slightly different from memory. I'm using my o/e rear shock. I think Andy used an Ohlins rear. I used the 1199 rear shock triangular mount plates to make up the gap so to speak. Can post pics up tomorrow when back in my cell!
Use the Forum search function and put in 899 single sided swingarm and you'll find threads on this. Nottingham Ducati who did Andy's conversation were very helpful too.
Cheers for all your posts. From what I gather the Swingarm should fit straight in, I'm also going to lengthen the swingarm by 35mm which stops the bike running wide on corners and gives more high speed stability. I have a friend who has connections with the bsb teams and this is the mod that they did, he also did the mod and said it was night and day. Nothing ventured nothing gained hey.
lengthening the swing arm requires cutting it though? Bloody hell that’s bold... you really need to be a fast rider to be going to those lengths. Also, the linkage will need to be custom to make the use of the different length as the chain pull will be different. If you are doing it, then most of what you read about parts compatibility will be out, you’ll need custom brake lines, speed sensor will need to be lengthened, hugger won’t fit or will look odd, etc
Your o/e abs and rear brake lines won’t be long enough for the 1199 rear; more so if you lengthen the 1199 one. Traction Control parameters will also change due to larger profile rear wheel/tyre. Bear in mind that the chain pitch and length are different between the two.
Like I said my friend has done this mod already and he still used the standard parts. Due to where you cut the swingarm the dog bone link still remained the same too. If it makes the bike handle better why do you need to be a bsb rider to benefit. It's all about changing the bikes geometry to make it go round a corner better. I'll let you know how it goes.
@Graphy899 any updates on this mod yet? Just thinking about this, you’d need to go 1 or 2 spring weights heavier to compensate for the longer arm? You had to on the older bikes. Looking forward to seeing some updates.
Your also going to find it won’t transition so well with a 6” rear wheel.... just saying like I’d stick with a 180 tyre and see how you get on
Hi, no not started it yet as we've been moving our weldshop at work. I've uploaded some pics from the one my friend did. I was gonna stick with the 180 tyre. Yeah maybe have to go up a spring rate.
Hi, I'm thinking of this conversion, have you begun the work and have you uncovered any problems? Thanks
Sulby65 not started yet but will be shortly, just been gathering all the parts. Still need a sprocket carrier and a couple of other bits but getting their. Cheers.
