97 900ss - help on wheel bearings

  1. Wheels back from powder coaters, looking great, all I needed to do today was refit the wheel bearings......

I had a new set ready from wemoto but the muppets sent the wrong ones for both front and back

Anyways, so I decided to refit the old bearings as an interim. The bike has only covered c. 9,000 miles and the bearings seemed fine on removal (no notchiness or roughness).

The front ones went back in fine no problems, but the rear bearings - they went back in with no problems, look to have seated properly in their races and I can rotate them fine.

However when I refitted the rear wheel, and tightened the wheel spindle to the specified torque, I can barely rotate the wheel. Its very tight indeed.

Wheel out, re-check the bearings, refitted - still too tight.

Front wheel is absolutely fine - its just the rear thats an issue.

I don't want to risk the wheels by repeatedly removing and refitting the bearings so for the sake of my sanity could somebody PLEASE tell me what I'm doing wrong????

  2. Steve,

I presume there is a domed spacer washer, which way round you fitting it. Quite sure its domed side to wheel.

    Cheers Gaz.

  3. Big chamfered or tapered spacer washer like Gaz says on the sprocket side........taper goes into the sprocket carrier, flat side outside.

And........did you re-fit the long spacer in between the bearings in the hub?

  4. Thanks chaps - I have the tapered spacer the other way round, will retry it later. The bearing spacer is refitted, presume it doesn't matter which way round that goes?

    Thanks,
    Steve
