97 Ss Rear Shock Rebuild

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by rhubarb and custard, Mar 18, 2015.

  1. Has anyone tried to rebuild one of these, with the blue adjuster on the reservoir top. I know practical superbike did an article some time ago, I'd like to try if it saves some cash and you learn something.
If it all goes horribly wrong what are the options for a replacement, hagon look good but haven't checked the price.

  2. That's a Sachs Boge shock......a specialist will charge you about £100 to deal with one.........I have a serviceable one here if you need to borrow it while you deal with yours....

  3. Cheers Al that's very decent of you, my just do the forks has turned into a restoration so I'm in no rush. Would you recommend anyone for a service?

  4. Have a spare one for sale if you're interested...........

  5. Depends where you are really................there is/was a guy in Ipswich and there is MCT at Stowmarket.

  6. You may be interested in this months Practical sports bike magazine march 15 issue 53 ,it has a pull out mag called workshop wisdom pat 1 of 6 first one is rebuilding suspension.

  7. I will have a look for that, I did have a chat with mct £90 for a straight service and £150 if the seals are gone.

  8. Which if it is leaking, the seals are gone........even the gubbuns inside can leak without it p*ssing out.......

The Showa I acquired was blown to pieces inside.

  9. mct said that they have to replace the piston for one which will accept a more modern seal, hence the jump in price.
Mine isn't leaking but now I've cleaned it the blue adjuster has seized up so i must have washed some crap into it. Marvellous.

  10. Out of curiosity, which SS model is this Sachs Boge shock on?

And is the swingarm steel or aluminium?

  11. It's off a 97, 750 with a steel swing arm, as luck would have it, the blue adjuster has sprung back to life.
Good luck with your sprag clutch.

  12. Good news.....

If you decide to change the swingarm to an ally one, change the shock for a Showa as well.

But if your SB shock is still giving you issues, you can borrow mine (I think it has a slight weep from the seal, but nothng that would fail an MOT).

  13. Cheers Al and thanks again.
