My 996 is difficult to start when cold, it needs a new battery anyway, will a lithium one give me better starting from cold? I used to start it with a jump pack when cold
There is a lot of information about the various benefits of lead acid/AGM vs LiFePO chemistries. LiFePO usually have higher Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) which gives you the oomph. HOWEVER LiFePO batteries don't like the steady drain of something like a tracker and need to be 'warmed up' in cold temperatures, put the headlight on for 30 seconds before you hit the starter button. LiFePO chemistry also need a MOSFET type regulator/rectifyer, if the pre 2010 reg/rec fails, it'll light the battery up, literally. Nowt wrong with an AGM and it tends to be cheaper. Andy
Thanks, I'll heed the advice, just need to buy a new jump pack as well, it'll no doubt be useful for the other reluctant starters anyway
If you haven't done it already...the cables to the starter motor are bit too thin. You don't need to replace them, just add a second pair of cables in parallell with the originals. A very easy improvement to feed more current to the starter motor.
That’s another thing, although I’ve not seen any evidence of anything happening, the advice is to never jump start a LiFePO battery. I have a NOCO booster pack and the instructions tell you attach the pack to the LiFePO battery terminals for 30 seconds and then remove before starting. Andy
If you do go the lithium route the code for the regulator/rectifier is: REGULATOR FH020AA (as used on BMW, Triumph, Ducat..etc) Best you'll get is ~£30 The Triumph adapter cable is: T2500676 ~£15 Modern LiFePO4 have inbuild safety mechanisms. I just got a really good deal recently on a BC battery
Also check the starter motor +12v terminal for corrosion. The rubber boot can act as a nice little water bath for it. My 900SL starter terminal was so corroded it needed a new one, these come with the starter brushes kits & are a bit fiddly to fit in situe.
