I've only had the bike for about a month now, I thought I should really give it an oil change. So Wednesday I was off work, dropped the oil out, and out came this. Think I'd better have the engine out and pull it apart, not a good start to ducati ownership, I'm even more gutted that I had a trackday booked for the 19th.
That looks like it could be the shim from the rear of the starter-sprag-flywheel etc the flywheel nut could be the problem. Take the left engine cover off to check/replace can be done without any engine out and you could still do your track day. brian.
After finding very similar bits in my crankcase during an oil change twice in the last five years I will put £100 quid that is from behind the sprag clutch gear.
I'd agree on the sprag/flywheel washer (depending on the size). I bought an ST2 engine as a cam donor and when I drained the oil, half of that washer was stuck to the magnetic sump plug, the other half was still wedged behind the flywheel. Looks like someone has refitted the flywheel assembly but not seated the washer properly so it broke, unless the other half is doing it's job then the flywheel assembly will be loose and wobbling around, which will cause all sorts of damage to the cases, alternator, bearings & crankshaft if not sorted..
I feel your pain, my 996 is in bits as well plenty of track days missed. Maybe a GSXR1000 would be a better track bike
