996 996 Oil & Filters And Oil Strainer Removal

  1. Hey

Any recommendations for oil and oil filters? I know it should be fully synthetic 10w/40 though I have seen 15w/50 or 20w/50 advised.

Do you need to change the oil to check the oil strainer? In other words, if I pull it, will oil piss out?

I have seen mention of these bikes needing slightly more tightening than the normal "finger tight + 1/4 turn" system. Do you lot agree with this?

    Cheers

  2. Motul 300V 15w/50 will leave you £50 lighter but may help to keep the chrome on you rocker arms and not in the sump.
A filter with a hex nut on top will make installation and removal easier. Yes, oil will piss out if you don't drain the sump first. If you smear some clean oil on the rubber seal of the new filter before installation you will achieve a better seal and make removal easier next time. I tend to do the finger tight/ quarter turn method and have had no problems but torquing every critical component is not a bad idea.

  3. Extra £10 for oil is a dam sight cheaper than new rocker heads IMO.

    Any recommendations on a filter?

  4. +1 for Motul 300v 15-50w & K&N 153 filter. Filter has a 17mm nut on't end so you can torque it down if you're so inclined, 14lb/ft.

ebay usually do deals (2wheelwarehouse) for about £57 ish quid for both ..

  5. Perfecto. Cheers guys.

  6. I'm with Mr Grey on this one Motul and K&N :upyeah:

  7. I'm going to be different coz I can, Rockoil TRZ 20w/60 and normal Ducati filter. Don't forget new washers for the sump plug and strainer. Top tip for the strainer, smear some grease on the washer and place up against the strainer bolt head. It stops the washer from falling down on to the shoulder on the strainer bolt whilst you are doing it up and will stop the possibility of you deforming the washer and have 1/4 of the sump dumped on the garage floor. Don't ask how I know this :Banghead:

  8. Why 20w/60? And a Duc filter not K&N? Top tips indeed, EBay for the washers?

  9. Sorry, why the wipers?

  10. Ducati filters from dealer are Dick Turpin price and probably made by mahle as per the site I posted.
Some like the K&N because of the nut shaped thingy on the bottom.

I think the concern over the wipers is the "fister" :Mooning:

  11. Sorry, maybe it has just been a long week, are you saying that Duc filters are probably the same as Mahle? If so does that make them better or worse than K&N?

  12. +1 for motul oil, but I just use whatever cheap shit filter my local shop has in stock. Hiflo rings a bell.
Not that it's a bad idea but i've heard about more than 1 nut shearing off the k&n filters leaving a usually over tightened filter really stuck on the bike.

  13. 20w/60 oil because it is "sticky" so it helps with the cold startup as there are documented tests that show it can take up to 90seconds for oil to reach the heads. Definitely not eBay for the washers see Baines for supply. Ducati filter.... Well I'm in getting the other parts so it makes sense

  14. Do you get the oil, filters and washes all from Baines and fit them yourself then?

  15. Motul 300v 15/50 - last time I serviced my bike, it hadn't run for 3 months but the rockers still had a coating of green oil. :upyeah:

Cheapo filters maybe OK but I use K&N for the ease of fitting/removal. Have known the flats on the nut to be soft but you can always get the mole grips on it plus they're not expensive anyway.

If you keep your eyes open you can often find a deal on both oil and filters if you're prepared to buy a few...

  16. Cheers all, appreciate the shared experience. Really looking forward to pulling the oil out to check for chrome!
