996 996 Stock Gearing?

  1. Hi Chaps,

last few bits coming together on my 996 and Im going going to fit a nice new chain and sprocket set.

Id like some advice as it seems to be a minefield, the bike currently has 16 up front and 40 on the rear and the rear is a Talon. I went JT on the 916 ands really liked it. but I would like some help with a nice all round gearing as id like to do some good miles on this bike and don't want to spoil it.

    Any help would be great,

    Thank you all

  2. Standard gearing is 15/36 I believe. Most increase the rear for better acceleration without losing any top speed as aerodynamics/power dictate that more than gearing.

On 916, I find 15/39 is good. IIRC 996 has a longer gearing via the primary drive so may need different setup?

Checkout; https://www.gearingcommander.com/ load the bike preset and it gives all sorts of useful info.

  3. As Dukedesmo says, standard gearing for 996 is 15/36.
It's primary drive ratio is different than the 916 although 15/39 isn't a bad set up on a 996 either.
I've tried stock ( terrible, waaayyy too long geared ) 15/39 ( an improvement over stock, but not enough of a difference overall, imo, to justify the investment in the chain and sprockets ) 15/41 ( the sweet spot imo, maintains the long legged nature of the engine allowing nice big torquey lunges across a wide rev range, while also providing some needed quickness) and the often recommended 15/43 ( which I do NOT recommend, hated it so much I got rid of the set up long before it was worn out, way under geared, constantly tap dancing on the shift lever, always looking for sixth when you're already there, haven't a clue why this is the recommended set up )
I hope this helps. I think 15/41 is fantastic, give it a go

  4. I like 14/36. Every 916/996/998 came 15/36. 748 models came 14/36.

Don’t care for the look of the larger cog at the rear.

  5. I'd count the front sprocket again. I don't think there is a 16T one available and from my experience with the 15, probably wouldn't fit.
I use a 15/40 on my 916 and it seems perfect for a track day and for highway use. These engines don't mind sitting on 4000 rpm for extended periods.
I find 15/38 or taller makes 1st gear way too tall and means lots of clutch slipping to get my slight 100kg away.

  6. What size chain did you use for this setup Martin? 94?

    Regards,

  7. Not certain Olly. I never count them but I think it's a couple more than that. I can count them when I get home from work. Cheers
