996 996r Help

  1. Hey everyone,

    I have the opportunity to buy a 996R, which is my dream bike that I have been lusting over for a while. Found #370 with 11k mi / 19k km. It needs some TLC on the carbon and some of the paint work but overall the bike is in solid condition. We have settled on a price of $31.5k USD (£23.1k GBP) which includes all of the import and shipping costs to the US which adds up to about $4-5k USD.

    Mind you, I enjoy working on my bikes, so I am not necessarily looking for something that is pristine. I would love to bring it back to that state myself.

  2. This is the one that Iconic Motorbikes are selling isn't it.

    it's a Japanese import as you know, so their Japanese agent is taking a cut, then there's the shipping, and then iconic are taking a cut.. how much of the sale price is wrapped up in shipping, import taxes and then the profits for the two or three dealers that have flipped it in quick succession.

    also the wheels are wrong and the carbon cans are missing, if it was a mega mint original bike then maybe I wouldn't feel so salty about such a big chunk of my outlay going into dealers pockets rather than paying for the bike... if that makes sense?

    if it were me I'd spend a bit longer searching for a bike already in the USA, ideally one that's been with an enthusiast/owner for a while who can give you detailed history on it.

  3. My "experience" ends at 6 and doesn't extend to R, so take that into account..
    I would rather it had a nice set of appropriate, aftermarket pipes and stock wheels, rather than the other way around like this bike
    Also, I agree with Max above, that I think you should be able to find a decent example in the states and save a chunk of money. Obviously you've been looking state side and are getting impatient, and if this one were absolutely stellar I'd say it would be worth it, but this one is just pretty good. Murphy being the devious fellow he is, I bet you by the time you got this one home and done to your tastes, one would pop up in the states that was a better example at a lower price..
     
  4. It has some parts missing from the original factory spec i.e the wheels, rearsets, airtubes, clutch cover, fuel cap, so perhaps a little overpriced without these parts.

  7. Way too many things wrong with that bike for me to consider...

    Wrong wheels
    Lots of after market bolts/fasteners
    Wrong weave on the after market carbon
    Didn't they come with a set of end cans also?
    It didn't have a carbon airbox as standard
    Wrong rearsets
    After market filler cap

    That's at first glance, I suspect it's been crashed/dropped thus the carbon clutch cover etc also.

    I think from memory it would have come with a boxed plaque, 996r cover and a rear stand also, but I could be wrong.

    I guess part of the issue here is that the 996R was never introduced to the US as a road bike due to emissions, you could buy it as a race bike and I don't think they were numbered also. So finding a road version in the US isn't going to be easy.

  9. Defo rs shock as the canister is ribbed. Looks like it has the pre load adjuster too.

  10. Hi thx for sharing.

    My opinion; don’t bite and look further.

    Wrong as if not original;
    - seat pad
    - wheels (original R type very hard to find)
    - A lot of bolts/fasteners
    - Carbon Airbox, which is standard on a 996R, but this one has a wrong weave.
    - rearsets
    - ohlins shock which is std, but this is an RS type.
    - all carbon parts, wrong weave, cheap china parts maybe.
    - there probably more, bit as said leave it.

    Going back to stock is always possible, but stock used parts aren’t cheap.

  11. 500 manufacturered, 350 with the top yoke numbered and 150 with no numbered yoke.

  12. agree with all of the above. prob going to be selling mine (#009) which is mint UK bike in a few months but wouldn't expect it to be financially viable to export to the US. as mentioned, must be worth waiting for right bike in the US
     
  13. Wheels look like they are from a 1098 I wouldn’t mind if they were the marchesini m10 spoke designed for the 916 style bike . The carbon is also all wrong and shock . I’d wonder why the carbon was changed from the standard carbon , I’d also be worrying about the speedo cable being fed in past the caliper it should go through the gap where the two bolts are , when it’s fed in the way it is it actually damages the fork leg .

I agree with all of the above points made, the bike looks "tired" and unloved, look in to all of the nooks and crannies and see years of dirt/neglect as well as all of the incorrect parts fitted. Looks like it might have been used as a track tool too, which might explain the "bitsa" nature of it. For me it is too far removed from original to command this sort of price, another example of dealers who don't really know the market, or subject matter, well enough to get involved at this end of sales so look eleswhere, you could buy a nicer example for s little bit more that would always be a safe bet regarding future values!
    Just my humble opinion but I have been dealing with them for over twenty years so I've picked up a few nuggets of knowledge over the years!;)

  18. Clip ons half way down the forkleg? Nearly as painful as those gold bolts and wavy rear disc. What a shame.
