  1. Hi guys. So basically I've bought 996r. 14 years old, hardly any miles, on original belts, I think prev owner did change fluids now and again, but bike not really been used at all, so it never actually been at dealer for service. I took it for MOT this morning, rode it super slow as belts are 14 year old after all, got there ( only couple of miles away) ,passed without any advisories , all good, tried to start it to take it home and it doesn't start. Fuel was super low , like next to 1 litre , so I assumed it was fuel, topped it up, same issue. Anyway , I shitted myself that belts must have gone ( or though I rode it without any problem to mot centre ) , so I pushed it back home. Got home, taken battery out , charged it up, took belt cover off from behind the battery box ( horisontal) and belt is in as new condition, just would not know it is 14 years old. Deffo didn't break. Could not get to vertical belt as didn't want to dismantle the bike. Charged battery super fully and it's still not starting up. Fuck.
Any ideas? It makes all the correct noises when you turn ignition on. Can vertical belt be broken ? Or what else can it be? Horisontal belt is so good that I am actually will be surprised if vertical is bad.
I am booking it for a service (1st of its life) but waiting list is 4-5 weeks and I want to get to the bottom of this problem now. Please help. This one going out to all the experts here!

  2. Could be 14 year old relays that have given up the ghost.

  3. thought my fuel pump relay had gone a few months back so i bought a new one and it was all good for a day then no go again.. turned out to be a 30p fuse that looked ok but was not

  4. Anyway, never mind it not starting, where's the pictures?

  10. By the way, 2 miles of pushing f...ng bike in leather jacket and helmet and gloves. I think I lost 3 stone

  11. It's very unlikely for the belt to break, they normally deteriorate and skip a tooth or so first. Whip the front (horizontal) cylinder plug out and check for a spark and compression. Failing that, check the kill switch. This sounds very familiar!

  12. Recon its desperate for the first proper service. Will get it booked in now. Have to wait few weeks though... Gutted. Wanted at least to start it up every now and again and knock one out listening to it before big service, but not gonna happen now

  13. two relays under the seat i know one is for the fuel pump, give them both a whack. or check the fuel pump connection under the tank.
