Hi guys! I alwasy wondered what is the difference between the 996S and 996SPS? Went on wikipedia and it is a bit confusing. It states that there were 3 different model,Biposto,S and R for the 996. But then it explains the SPS and R models but nothing about the S version! So my question is that my 2000 996S is a 996SPS or that is different? Hereis the wiki link Ducati 996 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Thanks, Peter
About 5 grand new I think ;-) They are different. Sure someone will be along and explain, or you could do a search as its been discussed many times. SPS = almost race bike. S = road bike.
Was nerding out on the subject after looking at the 2001 archive of the Ducati website today (see attached), which makes the 996S seem to be a rebadged 996SPS. Not quite the case, here’s the differences as far as I can tell: SPS has: Numbered plaque on yolk Some Titanium Engine internals (see below) Different ECU: P8 vs 16M Shorter gearing (Close ratio box) Monoposto rear subframe (enables larger P8 ECU) Carbon fibre Airbox But otherwise the bikes have the same: Power (owing to the T1 cams) Suspension (Ohlins/Ti-coated Showa combo) 50mm Termi exhaust system 5 spoke Magnesium wheels Two points of debate/inconsistency: Ti conrods also appear to be in *some* S models (at random) Not all SPS engine cases are the unpainted sand castings. Any other corrections please do add!
2000my sps onwards had ohlins front and rear, carbon rear under tray, fully floating front discs, not sure if the S had twin crank sensors either (doubt it as it uses different ecu). ive just seen the original post date
Haha, yes I fully exhumed the thread! My searching would also concur that the 996 doesn’t have twin crank sensors (I’d kind of included that in the ECU difference).
