This thread (if youve not already read it) is as good a place as any to start with https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/996-sps-fr2.94142/
Hi West Cork Paul, Yes I had found that post, full of great information. The information leads me to think mine is an FR2 but just looking for a definitive identifier. I have emailed Ducati with my VIN, so will see what information they have. Will also try Ducati UK to see what records they have. Other than Ducati just hoping someone on here can help confirm if an FR2 or not. Nice if it is but is an awesome bike regardless. I have owned since 2004.
Ducati or dealers with access to their system are the only places who can confirm if it’s recorded as an FR2. There’s so much uncertainty of what truly defines one that the only undisputed characteristic is that they are based on the 2000 spec SPS. As I mentioned in the other thread it may be that one of the key defining features of an FR2 is the cylinder head part number. The part number used in the normal 996 range - including the SPS is 30120791A But the part number used in the SPS II and the SPS III is 30120871A Unfortunately Ducati don’t seem to have put part numbers on any of these cylinder heads! Euro VIN numbers are a completely different format to US VINs and there’s nothing in them to indicate ‘Homologation special’ as seen in the US VINs. It would be great to confirm 100% that FR2 and SPS III are one and the same but at present there’s no evidence aside from some things written by Falloon. And as he also states that the FR2 and Pista are the same bike in the same article we know there’s inaccuracies in there.
Thanks. I have contacted Ducati, my email to Ducati UK failed (the email got through but some system rule decided to reject my email). So I will call them and a dealer today. Thanks for you advice and quick responses.
