Off to look at a 996SPS in the next week or so, the model with ohlins front and marchesinis. I know what comes on a 916, but what about the 996 - is there anything specifically to verify the right parts on one of these? Sandcast cases, certain ECU (p8?) etc etc.. What should these years have? Carbon front hugger, carbon rear hugger, carbon V panel, carbon under tray/license plate holder etc.. Any pointers?
Yep!! Problem is, I like the early graphics and I like front Ohlins. Shame there isn’t a model spanning both - the 996sps is the closes I’m going to get, early style plastics (not graphics) and Ohlins/Marchesini as factory. And it needs a tickle with a cleaning stick, which I like
How else you going to get both bikes in one then? Shouldn't have sold the 916. Just got some ohlins for it.
Mechanically 916 SPS and 996 SPS are the same. 996 afaik had Ohlins forks and different graphics and 5 spoke Marchesini wheels (not magnesium, aluminium alloy) Otherwise, basically the same. As said before, you should have just chucked some Ohlins forks and mag Marchesinis on the other one.
It had marchesinis on my 916 already, I flogged em and put the right brembos on. My mind is a strange place, but it is the way it is. Anyways, back to the 996.....
And not all 996sps have Ohlins forks.. the first batch didn’t, only the later ones Are they sandcast like the 916, same computer etc
Yes, I assumed you were only thinking of 996SPS with Ohlins /5 spokes therefore were not interested in the ones without Ohlins. Engine and injection/ecu are the same as 916SPS.
From memory (at 4am!) 99 - gold frame showa forks, grey 5 spokes. 2000 - grey frame, ohlins forks, grey 5 spokes.
Here are some pics of the bike that’s been in storage a good few years not the best pics but give you an idea of the new project I’m looking to be faced with!
