996sps Project So Far

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by Messer, Mar 31, 2020.

  1. Wasn’t planning on doing any kind of thread on this bike, as I couldn’t really be bothered and didn’t plan on doing too much to it - but as I’m sat here bored I felt what the hell, pics are good and the more pics of these Tamburini bikes getting fettled the better!

Anyways since selling my 916, I kind of thought why on earth did I do that and hankered after an ohlins/marchesini clad 996 later model bike and one turned up in a right old sorry state up in Scotland.

We had been talking a while, and the guy had a genuine reason why he had let the bike sit for ten years and hadn’t even looked at it during that time. It was at a mates house stuck in a corner of the garage. He bought it in 2004, and last set his eyes on it in 2010.

Here are the pics I had to go on, fresh from storage

  2. So head up to Scotland and first impressions were oh shit, what a state.
The pics made the bike look good, and whilst it was all there, it was bloody minging as you would expect.

Already being invested I still agreed and took it away wondering what the grime was hiding

  3. There it sat for a few weeks as I had no room at mine for it so it lived at my mums for a bit. But headed over to give it a sdoc100 wash and see where we stood.

couldn’t believe how well it came up just off a quick wash with the sdoc, but still needed a mild strip and deep clean

  6. These threads really help us get through these bad times well enough.
Keep up the good work Tony. But knowing you, it’s probably nearly finished! :)

  8. More general stripping showing the extent of its filthy ness. Thanks to product suggestion from @rob lewis on the bilt hamber auto wheel I was able to get the crap from the forks and the callipers were stripped and cleaned up thoroughly

  9. Genuinely was gobsmacked at how the callipers turned up.

I stripped them, soaked the sdoc on them and use a toothbrush to get all the grime and grease off but the brake dust was so embedded they just were not great. So the bilt hamber, 2x sorted them a treat. As seen here!

  10. Next up was the swing arm and hub to tackle. Again, thick with chain grease and crap and the carbon was so dull!

mixture of autofiness eradicate, sdoc on the arm, stripped and regreased hub, new renthal sprocket carrier and qr sprocket. Throw in replated axle and screws and good to go! Colour sanded and buffed the carbon too. Still not got my new chain riveter so not fitted the chain up yet!

  12. What is colour sanding Tony? Tell more.

    EDIT.
See you got the right pinch bolts too:upyeah:

  13. And this is how she stands as of today, buffed the nose, screen, seat unit (after stripping and thoroughly cleaning) and refitted.
Also re lacquered the airbox to brighten it up and colour sanded and buffed the v panel and front hugger.

loads of little bits I’ve missed off in between also, like replacing loads of engine fasteners, hose clips, cleaning up the exhausts and general stripping cleaning and degreasing!

just waiting on my metal fuel fasteners to arrive, new fluid reservoirs hoses and clips and then can bleed up brakes and clutch!

oh and waiting on my HD foam tape to fit new mesh in to the seat unit.

the world would be a very dull place if we all had the same opinions.

this screen is a crappy quality cheap thing.
