Are these a pain to install, live with etc.. are they a waster of time? I don't want to add bits that are worse than stock but I like the bits of carbon here and there but I don't want to stick covers on.. I rather it be a functional part. What about intakes, do these mate well? seal etc... issues? Thanks
A decent carbon airbox should be no harder to install or live with than the standard version, the design is the same and will use the same rubber gaskets to seal the airtubes etc. There's no huge advantage though, a bit lighter, maybe a bit stronger (stiffens the frame?) and the carbon look, so it's up to you whether you think it's worth it. EVR in Italy make a larger airbox in carbon which, they claim gives a power increase. I've got one on my 916 (slightly different box to 998) and any power claims are certainly dubious plus it does make servicing trickier as the throttle bodies are entirely within the airbox so not so easy to get at plus it has silicone gaskets that need resealing everytime you remove them. It certainly is bigger though; double the volume, it's also stronger and stiffer but quite costly...
intake tubes come in a couple of different varieties. one type has the slots to take the original filter/gauze, the other needs a filter either in the airbox, or some mods being done. the former are pretty much a straight swap, the latter are a straight swap, but there have been some debates as to what alternate filter to use. i have stock airbox, tubes and filters so my comments are based on what I have read on here.
Later 748R comes with a 2 piece carbon air box as standard. Easy to fit although as said when using carbon air tubes the choice of filter is quite large but don't let that put you off. Carbon air box is pure bling and well worth it . Andy
Some airtubes are larger where they fit into the fairing intakes, if you find a set of these you will need to use a different fairing nosecone in order to get the tubes to fit properly. I have a setup like this and the tubes that I have have no way of fitting filters into the tubes them selves so an in airbox setup is required.
They're relatively easy to fit , if it's a DP one it'll have all the necessary airduct guides & fittings , if it's an unknown one it probably won't and might not fit exactly there won't be any "performance" improvement but it will look cool just make sure 100% it's a 998 one as none of the others 748 (including the 2 part R box),916,996 etc will fit (OK except for a 996R one but there's not a great deal of hope finding one)
Mine has larger air carbon tubes, I cut the fairing holes bigger to suit but they still use the original rubber gasket and clips to fix to the airbox. No filter facility so I have the BMC filters. Here's my EVR airbox. Nice and blingy, shame you can't see it when the tank's on...
