998s front disks - alternatives and strip down

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by efcbluepete, Apr 6, 2012.

  1. Hi,

Was wondering if anybody knew of compatibility of other brake disks with the 998s?

Also, having never had a bike with floating disks before, is it possible to separate the actual floating disk from the mounting section, and therefore get just disks (as the shudder from them when decelerating quickly is like a very coarse ABS system).

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks

    Pete

  2. Shouldnt shudder that bad - unless the floating washers are worn out?

Normal type discs will fit fine, quite a common sizing on these bikes - Im sure somebody will be along soon to say what is compatible?

  3. Yes, something a bit strange there pete, the stock brake setup on the 998 is superb.

  4. The brake discs bobbins can be replaced, but its the bell carrier that usually wears that the
    bobbins locate to.
Have you cleaned all the bobbins are free to turn/move ?
Have you checked your steering head bearings for play ?
do you feel a pulsing through the lever ?

    brian.

  5. 998 discs aren't fully floating disks anyway, and shouldn't clank like the old sps disks do....

If you are replacing them, make sure the disk offset is 10mm - R disks have a wider offset of 15mm and wont fit.

  6. They should be the same as all of the 748/9*6 discs.I think aprilia mille and FZR1000 poss YZF750 are the same.

  7. Thanks for the help, today's two jobs are: front disk clean up to ensure bobbins move, and get some extra square mm of copper from battery to help with starting. Will post outcomes later.

    Cheers,

    Pete

  8. All done. Brake bobbins were solid, so all freed up and seemingly ok.

New battery fitted under seat with 7.5mmsq cable to main battery. Fires up really easy, even when lights all on, etc.

Fingers crossed the fixes stay good.
