999 (03-04) vs 999(05-06)

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by xb12r, Mar 26, 2013.

  1. Dear All!

I planning to buy Ducati 999 04 and i dont have any clu about these motobikes i had till that time only japanese bikes and 1 buell.
Which are the main differences between 03-04 and 05-06 because the bike which is for sale the front fairing is from 05-06 but the rear swingarm and the colour of the frame is looks like 03-04. May i fraid about the erliest models or not?
Which are the critical points at these bikes? What i need to check? The bike is form 1st owner and he done on the bike only 9000km.
    Thanks in advance!

P.S Sorry for my bad english skils a tried to do the best myself.

  3. 2005> Red frame black, swing arm, black wheels and different fairings. 999 base model gets deep sump engine and a power hike but does not get Ti rods, S model gets a power hike as does the R. All come with Radial calliper's ( I Think).

  4. Nothing at all wrong with the 03/04 models but a lot of folks think the 05/06 models are more desirable. Which means they actually are more desirable, when you think about it.

I love my '03 bike but then maybe I'm biased. I'm not, but maybe I could have been

  5. Thanks guys!
I really dont know what shall i do? I like very much v-twins i had before RC51 and RSV mille and my realy first v-twin was the Buell XB12r. I am bit affraid about the service. On japanese bikes bikes i done everything myself even valve adjustment or whatever , and as i sad i dont have any experince about these bikes. I just realy like how it looks. So betwen the 2 models are not major changes i mean the 03-04 is not much bad like 05-06?
How long distance can normal human(not masochist) done on these bikes?
    Thanks for every little info.

  6. if you can keep up the pace, 260 m/day? depends on what is waiting for you at the end.... :)

  7. Yes of corse its depend on the motivation :) i just hope that 1 track day not will be horrible on this bike. I saw your profile that you had 999R. Can you tell me which kind of problems you had with her and how many miles you put on the bike?
    Thanks!

  8. perfect for tracking! ... not tiresome at all... managable output and handles well.. great stability...
problems? nothing really apart from a broken loom due to mediocre job from those who (re) installed it...

  9. Ooops iam sorry but i dont understand what do you mean under loom due to mediocre. Loom its in dutch lenguage means wire if i am right?

  10. Loom is the main wiring that's all bundled together and which snakes its way around the frame.

The earlier models are really no less reliable or useable that the later ones, the differences are mainly cosmetic or related to bragging rights - deep sump, conrods, etc. I defy anyone who isn't a top club racer or above to find fault with the earlier brake calipers of the early models, compared to the radial set up of the later ones. Some folks will tell you that the later models make more power but that's mainly an illusion based upon the different way that Ducati measured the output - 03/04 was measured at rear wheel, later models at the crank. Slightly remodelled upper fairings in later models, but that's a preference thing. Different swinging arms, but again, an opinion thing.

The only difference you'll find is that more people prefer the later tweaks and cosmetics. On the track, or riding a comfortable 250-300 miles a day on the road, there's nothing between them, not really.

Early models suffered from a warranty recall for the oil cooler (probably all have been done by now) and, if I recall correctly, slightly flaky ignition coils, again no doubt addressed in a bike you're looking to buy. The range - across all years - suffered, in the case of the single seat model, a possible weakness in the sub-frame. Not a common fault.

If it was me, I'd look for the earlier model because you're bound to be able to talk the seller down in price - tell him you're looking for the later model - and you'll still get awesomeness on two wheels.

  11. Rode from Essex to Bologna in 2 days on mine(05) without any pain in 2010(unlike 2002 on a 888, that was torture) All motorway so not very physical. I do have raised clip-ons and they make a lot of difference, I'm 6' tall and 60yrs. I've done 22.000 miles on it since I bought it in 2007 and had no problems.

  12. +3

  13. Thanks very much for your response!
It helps o lot mainly i heard first time that on early models they measured the power on rear wheel. Thanks again!

  14. From what I've read the 05-06 (facelift) base models have higher tuned motor. MY 03-04 126bhp. MY 05-06 140bhp. Increase is due to higher lift (S)cams, compression ratio up from 10.4:1 to 11:1 and lighter crankshaft. Rear Wheel/Crank bhp measurement changed quite a few years earlier. Most base MY05-06 999 have old style front brake calipers(not radial). What you need to be aware of is the factory put out a few 'mix and match' bikes, 03/04 bikes with some 05/06 fairings and black swingarms to sell old stock. They have grey frames.
