Evening all! I'm after a new chain and spokes for my 05 999. I've been advised to keep the standard 15t front sproket but up the rear sproket to a 42t. Has anyone done this combination and can you recommend where is best to get them from please?
I use a 15/39 combination, for fast road/casual but I have heard of others using 15/42. It is my opinion that the T9 greatly benefits from an increase in teeth on the rear sprocket from the default 36t. I'm assuming you have no worries over losing top speed, and enjoy wrestling to keep the front end down, 15/42 should be fun!
+1 for 15/39. Just right for me, and ok with standard length chain (with grey swingarm). Try Sportsbikeshop.
I too will only be doing fast road/casual and top speed isn't something that can really be done many places so that's not an issue. It was louigi moto that recommended that setup as that's what they use. Out of idle curiosity what amount of speed do you loose on your set up? Also what chain do you use? I know it's a 525 but there are so many options I'm a little stumped.
I also use 15/39. 15/42 must be a hoot but a little light on the front end at times. If you are interested in the variations and changes to speed at revs try this https://www.gearingcommander.com/ and here for more info http://www.ducati-upnorth.com/tech/gearing.php Chain - don't go for a cheap one, DID 525 x ring zvm are amongst the best but Renthal, AFAM and Tsubaki are good quality. Avoid the cheap ones but whatever one you get look after it.
It says that running a 15/39 increases wheelbase and lowers the ride height so did you have to adjust your rear ride height adjuster bar? Also it says it requires a 98 link chain rather than the stock 96. Do all chains have more that the minimum required links or will I have to search for a 98 link chain?
You can buy a chain with loads more links, into the low 100's but the more links the higher cost. You buy a 96, 98, 102, whatever you need.
I used 98, the difference in wheel base has very little effect and is within the wear range of a normal chain, affect on ride height is even smaller. You get a bigger effect using the 180-55 tyre rather than the 190-50 Ducati suggest is correct for the 999 (the 180 as specified for the 749 is better with easier turn in and a better match for the front profile imho).
