999 Deep Sump Link Pipe

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Dorset Desmo, Jul 22, 2015.

  1. Hi Folks,

Please could someone confirm my suspicions that I have a shallow sump / early model 999 De-Cat front pipe instead of a decat pipe for a Black Swingarm / deep sump 999 which is what I thought I had bought...?

(The pipe hits the sump and/or the swingarm and the frame mounting is too low for the fixing screw.... D'oh !)

If it is the wrong one (which I am 99% sure it is) does anyone have a deep sump decat pipe for sale? !!

(I don't really want to hack out the cat on my original one and have a slip on Termi sat on the garage floor waiting to be heard!!)
    Cheers,
    DD

  2. The right hand pipe is for deep sump engine the left one doesn't have the bracket and rubber pad to protect the fairing from touching the exhaust. So pretty sure it's as you thought not for deep sump.
Not too sure you can get a decat deep sump front pipe. I just got a friend whose pretty handy to cut out the cat and weld a piece in its place.

  3. Thanks for the reply. Yep, getting nowehere fast... so I cut the zaust open either side of the cat and hinged it open (half way around to keep it's geometry) and hacked it out. I managed to get it TIG welded locally the same day. Now all sorted with new DP filters & ECU DP remap.
Also my arse is noticeably cooler now with the Termi.

  4. Im looking for a de cat front pipe for a shallow sump if you still have this @Dorset Desmo . It's for a late 749 so I assume it's the same?

  5. Yup - Still have it. I am working abroad at the moment - will let you know when I am back if you would like it (should be in 2 weeks time..).
    Cheers,
    DD.

  6. Yes that would great DD thank you. As a matter of interest did you run yours with the standard pipe on before you cut and removed the cat? I'm getting mixed messages about removing the cat but I suppose it makes perfect sense to do so as it would restrict the horizontal cylinder.

  7. I didn't run it without having removed the front Cat. The CAT is like a wide, miniature wriggly tin sheet rolled up like a carpet and welded in the pipe. Having hacked the one from the front pipe out and cored a spare silencer (another ongoing project..) I am amazed the bike has any performance at all in standard form...
Having done mine together with ECU etc it runs much crisper and cooler. I'm no expert but I would advise against running yours imbalanced with the standard front pipe and Termi race silencer for the reason you have stated.
I would also sort the fuelling too - PCIII or ECU remap. (I have a PCIII also which I will be putting on Ebay shortly with some other stuff. To be honest though I would spend a bit of time looking into the DIY ECU remap route with Android TuneECU (assuming yours is a 5AM type). That is how I did mine on a second hand ECU. It is more hassle / effort but deffo the cheaper option. Check the Android TuneECU thread on here...)
    Cheers,
    DD
