Hello, Now just maybe you will recognise my ID as having posted an intro and also an advert for a 999R wanted . So the news is that while I am still looking for the elusive 999R to meet my obsessive requirements , ( Red frame late 2005 onwards low mileage FDSH etc etc ) I have come across a very nice 999S which I couldnt resist and it ticked most of the boxes and truth is that If I didnt buy something I suspect that my wife would probably go off her head if she heard me talking anymore about triple nines bla bla bla - So enough talk and I bought it .... So its a very suitable project for over the * weather - My neighbour spotted it in the garage at the weekend and he believes its not in need of any 'restoration' = Its true I think its drop dead gorgeous - However being the obsessive type that I am, i really need this 2005 bike to look better than new - and I will do it. This weekend therefore amidst gasps from my neighbour i started to dismantle and referring to my CD version of the workshop manual started the teardown...I have to say a workshop manual is such a handy thing to have - Anybody know where I can get a paper version - Get fed up scrolling back and fore through the adobe files?? Anyway the real questions are as follows - My eyes strayed into the assembly areas of the teardown chapters and you will see from my intro in newbies section - I am a seasoned biker with a long list of machines to my credit ( except a Ducati - this is my first) and do a lot of old car tinkering - so im reasonable competent ( I like to think) but I was astounded to see how the belts are adjusted - via a form of audible tuning mechanism ??? So I really wondered if I was missing something - is there not a more readily available/reliable method or is this a dealer only activity, it seemed a pretty hit or miss affair but I have never done it but have come from a school of measurement by distance not twanging Is this really what everyone does?? - and another question re throttle sync - Is there any tool to help the home obsessive or is this really a dealer job too ? Thanks in anticipation of enlightenment Im just out to the garage have a look at her naked, no bodywork, exhaust, air tubes, belt covers just lovely red tubes , substantial forks, Ohlins and a V twin motor .... Steve
If you get the Haynes 4 valve manual, it covers the ealier models but the main info is relevent. It will tell you how to tension the belts using spring balance scales and possibly other ways. If you google ducati 4 valve belt tension there'll be countless videos showing various methods too. TPS has to be done by laptop with specific software although I've done my 2 valve tps by ear and had it running as good as a pc setup.
Certainly lots of people use the twang method. I used to use the twist between finger and thumb method and never had a problem. However I now use a cheap ebay clip on microphone and a free guitar tuning application. Results are very repeatable and accurate. Just do some searching and you will find this discussed in depth on the net.
Came across this. Where did you get the PDFs. Not found them online for the workshop manual. Appreciate being pointed in the right direction. Ta Paul
Yep tried there. They seem to be just the parts manual (useful for exploded views) or the owners manual (comes with the bike) still looking.....
Chris........you little beauty. Thank you so much.........I faffed around for ages on line trying to find that. many many thanks
