999 servicing

  1. Hi there, I was wondering if I just changed the oil and filter annually ( 2000 miles per year max ) and got the major service done, valves and belts, done by a dealer if that would be enough or am I best getting her serviced by a ducati specialist all the time? She is a 03 999s running 8300 miles. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.

  2. Depends how mechanically capable you are, and how deep your pockets are? i do as much as I can and let Baines Racing do the complicated stuff.

  3. I can do the oil and filter and other bits, just curious if it's nessessary to let the dealer do it, as in there is lots more to a annual service than just the oil and filter or is it really just that straight foreword like a jap IL4?

  4. The only difference is shimming the valves. Belts are straight forward takes about about an hour total. The long job is the shims as you have to drain and remove the radiator to do the front, and tank to do the rear. Apart from the engine the rest of the servicing is no different to a Jap IL4.

  5. I would suggest you do as much as you are comfortable to do , even doing the fuel tank filter isnt that difficult , if you keep all the reciepts then i cant see that putting anyone off in future.
I brought all my servicing parts from Moto Rapido and they even suggested the gasket for the oil meshn strainer that i hadnt even considered .

  6. I've always done my own servicing. There's nothing new in there so if you've got the time do whatever you feel capable of. The only training I've ever had was working on my own bikes cos I couldn't afford paying dealer prices. I'd rather buy a new tool once to do a job for the rest of my life than pay the same amount year in year out at a garage. Plus, when you do it you KNOW it's done. Done right is a different question and we won't go into that. As Chase says keep the receipts and I can't see an issue in future.

  7. i always do my own servicing and last year was the first time i did the belts on the 999s bit of a worrie, but as long as you follow the step by step online guide and you will find plenty on Utube
when i got my bike the seller got it serviced by the local ducati dealer and it cost him over £500:eek:

  8. On my 748 i do a oil/filter service one year and then let a specialist do a big service next year. Bike only does 1 to 1.5k miles per year so i think this works well.
