999 sprocket combination

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Bananaman, May 8, 2013.

  1. I have just got my 999 and feel it is too highy geared, what is the best front/rear sproket combination for general street riding? I prefer the low down grunt compared to the high end speed and want to change the chain & sprocket combination.

  2. I recommend 15/39. Well-mannered through town and well able to leap off like a scared cat when you open up. Not bad on the mpg (mine actually improved on the standard 15/36 set-up mpg) plus you still have a fine top end.

Some folks say get a 14t front but I'm in the camp that says that's too small and puts the chain under too much stress. Downside of the 15/39 (or 40 or 41, even) is you need a longer chain. So what, I say

  3. I would say drop one on the front to 14t , however that may not be the easiest solution as sometimes it can be a PITA to get the nut undone, providing your chain is long enough you could go up a couple of teeth or three , IIRC std rear is 36 ,try 39 .
I ran until recently 14 /41 but I was topping out just before I needed to change up ,then brake for a quick change chicane , so I've gone back to 15 front and feel thats good for me.
    Hope I havent confused things.
    Pete.

HMMM beaten to it by Loz coz I is a slow typer

  4. Ive just gone back to 15/39 was at 15/41 which was a bit of a hand full on the 9R around town to be honest . Might be the quick action throttle didnt help though . Same chain length for 41 to 39 but not sure I could get down to 36 .

  5. Doh! That's right!

Get a quick action throttle - 2004 Yam R1 (is that right?). Outstanding mod for silly little money.

  6. I've got a 14 tooth on the front, and have done 4000 miles without causing any chain problems.

The bike feels ok to me at low speeds, with an amazing amount of torque but has obviously lost some top speed. It still managed to indicate 160+ (on a runway) and I'm never going to need more than that!

For the ease of changing it I would say a 14t is worth a try.

  7. Thats right Loz, 15 quid mod and well worth it on the 999... Should be an old post from me somewhere.

  8. 14-38 plus R1 throttle works very well for me

  9. I run a 15 40 with a slightly taller 190 55 rear.
I run the front end aggressive head angle with the fork tops raised about errrrrr 15mm from memory
    on ntecs

steers beautiful and very quick to change direction
but I am also sat on carbon BST wheels

    if you goto gear commander.com

you can roughly estimate the effect of gear changes

(a quick action throttle is all good and well but can be a liability for smooth fast riding on country lanes...just twist the wrist faster when you need to and have the benefit of easier throttle control when you need finesse)

I think a 14t can wear out too quick and be under too much torque for its size (roughly 7% less contact area and increased link angle. can also cause swing arm probs on some bikes). I found an interesting read a while ago debating gear combinations. will see if I can find it...
