Just wondered if there's any ways for sure to tell if a 999 is the r version..... Does it say 999r on the log book? Cheers
Can't recall the log book, the frame is different though to non R models, you can tell by the rearset mounts, R frames have two mounting holes for the rearsets, non R's have more holes for more adjustability.
My R and Fila R both show 999R on the log book - the Fila R has Fila R Printed on the red plastic tab code.
Also you will see 104 (bore size) cast into the back of the rear cylinder and not 100, if the engine no has 999 as FE says but the casting shows 100 it's been rebuilt with a standard or S top end.
I read that someone had done the reverse by machining the stud bores - an R top end onto an S so maybe there is enough casting to allow this to be done the other way round.
My 2 have, both 2003. It would be interesting to know if the 05 / 06 ones did - anyone have one to check? They do have 999 engine numbers too as FE said above.
All the 999r bikes had a different frame from to the s or standard model. Removable section behind the headstock and only two positions on the footrest mountings rather than five on the standard bikes. I believe Sand Cast casings were the fitted to all the 999r's as well. Early 2003 bikes had radial brakes when the S and basic model had traditional caliper mounts fitted
Not to mention the carbon fairings, carbon/magnesium mirror brackets, magnesium headlight housing, magnesium valve covers on later models, forged wheels, removable exhaust bracket etc.
' Ah, did the 05/06 'not' have Carbon Seat Units like the earlier ones? Did they not have Magnesium Wheels cast in the same moulds as the forged alloy wheels on the Fila's as in the press release? Magnesium Valve Covers were available in 2003 on Fila's as was the Black Swing Arm. Early ones had Carbon mirror brackets, later ones Magnesium.
I still don't thing the standard R came with Mag wheels, forged alloy was what was fitted to all the bikes I have seen. And I am sure the bi colour wheel set fitted to the Fila was also early forged alloy with the thicker spokes as they were also available as from the performance catalog
Me too, but the press release issued in 2003 for the Fila does say so, I presumed they were cast in the same dies if this was the case.
