999s (2005) - road and track day advice, tyre choice

  1. Since getting the bike last year and splashing around some very wet track days in 2012, have now managed a couple of dry ones in 2013. Serious improvement in my ability on track - confidently holding my own now in intermedate group. It's all down to the bike

So now with a front tyre worn out, need to think about replacement. Michelin Pilot fitted. I will want something that is OK in the wet and on the road, but I do save the quick stuff for track days. Not into vans and tyre warmers - I ride there, ride around, ride home.

I don't like a tyre that has abrupt profile change - a progressive tip into the bend suits me.

    Any thoughts?
    Stick with Michelin?
Pilot 3s seem to have their fans.

Oh and rear still has life in it....change the pair at the same time?

I dont know how old the rear is as bought the bike last Feb - but checking paperwork it appeared to have only done 500 few miles from 2009 to 2012. What a waste.....

  2. If the rear is three years old I'd replace that too - the rubber tends to go a bit wooden over time and you'd be better off with two fresh matching tyres. They degrade gradually so you almost don't notice but I'm always amazed how the handling improves every time I get a new set :)

    Treat yourself!

  3. I run Power ones on my 999s. Front (B compound) is the V profile which is quite steep but helps the bike drop in. Rear I run a 180 section and C compound.

  4. Gone Power 3s.....Power 1s really don't have much tread for the wet ! Will report back....
