999 999s Tourer

  1. Hi All
I've been away from the forum for a while as I work away, but I'm back now and I've just had 4 days riding around North Wales. I've toured quite a few times on my GS but thought it was time I tried it on the Ducati.
Apart from sore wrists/hands when in traffic or through towns it was outstanding. Having a big comfortable tourer with loads of luggage is fine, but having the power and handling worked better for me on this trip :)

  2. The only thing stopping me touring on my 999S Mono,is the lack of anywhere to strap my big waterproof roll top bag,i don't like the idea of a tank bag due to the shape of the tank on these beauties, you can obviously get the dedicated Ducati item but that seems a bit limited for capacity....You must have been travelling light;)

  3. North Wales truly is a jem

  4. I travelled fairly light......
I took an old oxford magnetic tank bank (not bike specific but perfect for what I wanted) and a Kriega R25 which was bought purposely for this trip. Very impressed with the Kriega - top quality kit and surprisingly comfortable to wear whilst riding.

  5. We went 2up to Saschenring this month on my 999. 1700 miles mainly autobahn. Dresden, Nuremberg and Luxembourg on the way back. Great bikes for fast distance work. Got raised clipons so a bit easier with a tank bag. 3 tees, kaks, and socks. 1 pair of jeans and shorts. Jobs a goodun.

  6. gollocks!

  7. Tee hee. That's why I have a 999 Bip. Not for a passenger but for the tail pack obviating the need for tank bag or rucksack.

  8. I'm getting sore wrists everytime i go out on it, fast road riding is fine but through towns is a nightmare. What the most miles in a day you've managed on the 999?

  9. About 370 miles is the most I've tried. It wasn't too bad but add another 100 on top and I would have been ready for a kip ;)

  10. I once rode from Gascony in South West France, to Andorra (because I wanted to check it out - I needn't have bothered) to Switzerland in the day (and a very hot one it was).
I did the Switzerland - Gascony trip on various things: 906, 851, 907ie, 916 and 999 - always in a day. It was about 900 kms from memory - say 550 miles of which about 33% motorway.

But when I came back via Andorra I think it was about 1200 kms, say 750 miles.
Was my bum a bit sore? Yes.
That is far more riding in a day than I really need.

Still, in the 80s (when I was bendier, poorer and stupider) I once did Switzerland to Cambridge non-stop 2-up on an unfaired Honda 400N - without using French motorways.

  11. Mine kills my right wrist so I bought a Nike wrist strap from Sports direct £6.99, I tried it this weekend on a sortie to North Wales did 270 miles and it was only the last 20 or so miles back home up the M6 where I started to feel starting to get sore but its was far more bearable that previous.

  12. Looks like a good idea worth trying.
Does it interfere with the fit of your gloves?

  13. You do notice it at first but it does not interfere

  14. Oxford tank bag and Kreiga R35 was perfect. Stow on the Wold to Assen via Calais no problems.

  15. I once did 800 miles in a day on my 749, Colmar to Crewe! Not the most comfortable journey I have ever done, but not as painful as I thought it would be!

  16. I did a 496 miles round trip to the Lake District the other week. Just under 300 miles there and back on mainly A roads with a bit of motorway, the rest around the Lakes. We rode down past Ullswater, then on to Ambleside, Windermere, Coniston and Keswick. With Kirkstone, Wrynose and Hardknott Passes thrown in, it was quite a day. Hardknott was.....emotional :Wideyed:.
Thought I`d be a crippled mess but I was ok, I could have rode the next day if I had to. Glad I didn`t though. :)

  18. Has anyone got riser bars? adjustable/aftermarket clipons? I'm trying to get a feel for what would be useful. Gonna be doing about 300 miles a day through europe for a week. Anyone got any tyre recommendations? Was looking at a pair of Metz M7RR's.

  19. interesting thread, and nicephotos,,, good to know that they can be used for distance and touring,, this is my intention.

  20. I have the Giles vario bars on mine. Same ones were on my 998 then my 999S and now on my 999R . They are about 50 mm higher and back . Word of warning though you need to lengthen the throttle and idle cables about 60 mm . I took mine to a local bike shop and he made me some up using my existing cable hardware.
