Looks like the bike in the photo is in the US, judging by the reflector on the forks. Did the disaster occur after participation in one of those chili cook off competitions? Texas Chili Cook Off (Humor - Warning: Rough Language)
Appaarently a regulator fire??? In the US Here's the owners account; "I was riding through a neighborhood and the bike simply cut off. I stepped off to investigate and it immediately burst into flames. A very nice guy ran out to assist but it was too late. We were able to get the fire out before the fuel went up. Even still, too much damage for insurance. They totaled my bike."
Another Ducatist who had the same problem... "I had that EXACT thing happen to my 09 S1000. Engine light would come on then shut off...then pulling in to work white smoke from under the seat. Pulled the seat off and flame erupted, luckily I was quick enough with a rag to put the fire out. Regulator failed and wires melted together."
Quite like that dusty, smokey road warrior look though, makes a change from seeing them all pristine and pampered.
if that was mine I would buy it back from the insurance company and build with the monies the insurance pay me using diopa seat new lipo battery ( or however you spell it ) aluminium tank etc......win win situation. I see this as an opportunity, would I want it happening to mine? eh no.
Keep that pic out of the way of Multistrada owners, they'll all be jumping on the bandwagon and the forum will soon be flooded with ' My multi burst into flames' threads.
Had same on my 748 few years back thank fuck for dzeus fasteners and a warning form a mate a few weeks earlier " you know those regs can catch fire?" bastard put the commentator's curse on me... Still when I smelt burning electrics and seen a wisp of smoke pass me eyes as I sputtered to a stop I knew exactly where to look and ripped battery lead off. Its quite a traumatic situation!!!!!!
