A1 To M3 Round M25

  1. I know a few of you folks live in this area. Is this section of M25 a permanent car park
I want to go to Farnborough its easy to get to M25 but whats it like round to the M3 is there a good time to hit it

  2. 0300 providing they haven't closed it for roadworks...

  3. There is never a good time to hit it, except early morning. Beware gantry cameras on speed control areas. TBH the M3 is the worst road. If you are on 2 wheels it will be fine anytime. I wont travel on M25 during morning and evening rush hours. It will still be very busy outside those hours but generally better. But the road can jam up anytime.

  4. Thanks for the replies. Will have a rethink

  5. Pre 07:00 or between 10:30 and 15:00 and you'll be fine.

  6. I reckon it depends where you access it and which direction you go round.......

If you are coming in from M1or A1, it would seem logical to go anti-clockwise but expect it to bunch up around Rickmansworth and the approach to the M4 at any time.

I usually approach from the clockwise direction and have to go 'up' the M3 or the A3........going 'down' the M3 is worse IMO than the A3.........I normally try to be near junctions 10 or 12 somewhere between 11.am and midday.

  7. Rush hours is busy but outside of that you will be fine. As said above, on two wheels it's OK. Late evening is actually very nice often, people are out and not travelling and about 10PM it is often not bad. Very late at night is worse as that have constant lane closures and roadworks in place temporarily. I'd not think about it that much, on a bike I travel all hours without any issues. In the car, I've had to put up with rush hour and it's not as bad as grim northerners make out.

  8. Thanks for that

    from a grim Northener

  9. The bit of the M25 round Heathrow is the worst - definitely avoid rush hour.

And after all that, you end up in Farnborough, commiserations!

(I live in Farnborough, I should know! A town of few redeeming features other than cheaper houses than Guildford, ease of escape (2 railway lines and the M3), plus a reasonable smattering of bike gear shops).

  10. I work in Farnborough - I would stay where you are :)
