Spoke with 'Ducati John' Cellier today. He told me about two bikes he has recently worked on (1198,SF) where both had abnormal wear between the bobbins, the disc and the carrier. It would appear the steel bobbins are wearing away the alloy carrier. He checked my own 1198S (4000 miles) and found a small amount of movement, but nothing like the ones he had replaced. Whilst I was there I videoed one of the worn out discs Disc Wear | Flickr - Photo Sharing! My 2003 999 does not display the same movement at the bobbins as my 1198. After watching the video could any 848/1198 and SF owners check their front discs and report back. Also could anyone with a Panigale report on what sort of movement they have in their discs, so that we know what a new bike is like. John has used EBC discs to repair both bikes to save the owners money. However, at the moment EBC do not do a disc with the sensor bobbins for the DTC.
Ive just replaced my front discs (1198) with 1198s discs with the dtc sensors. My bike had 7k on it. The donor discs were about the same as I got my micrometer out. I checked both sets carefully and didnt spot anything untoward. btw Chris DTC works well. I also have a spare set of discs for sale. Ahem...
I know they have their weight and cost to consider but a fully floating disc with bobbins of that diameter and only 6 fixings is asking for trouble and early signs of 'wear', particularly if ridden hard as a result.
Chris, checked mine just now & no play at all... 2008 848 8k & a quick look at the books dont mention any disc changes by either prev owner.. That video is plain messed up!!!
Ooh err... Mine are like that. Next stop Almeria with a 170mph straight. Anyone got a pair of front brake discs for a 1098R??
Were the original discs knackered? And will your discs for sale fit a 1098R (DTC)? Dunno if the 1198 has DTC. Cheers.
Mine are also like this, been like it since I got the bike at 1400 miles, now done 5500 on an 09. Thought this was how they where supposed to be as they are semi floating? Mine have the other issue of juddering like a warped disc but checked with dti and only couple of thou.
You might be ok. And you're right, there is a bit of play due to clearance on the bobbins. The concern is when the play gets too much and the bobbins let go... Yikes! But this is usually with heaps of trackday hammer.
There are full floater options out there with more than 6 bobbins that still have DTC included - worth a thought when renewal time comes up. Would be a no-brainer for me.
you need to make sure the dtc sees the correct amount of pick ups..no more no less...its not very adjustable.
I recently had my discs replaced under warranty. The DTC version (which mine uses) cost daft money because the disc has the magnetic pick ups. I'm not sure what determines a shagged disc. Perhaps there is a tolerance on thickness. I changed mine because there was shitloads of play and they actually looked a bit frazzled... But they were working fine at the time.
