Advice On Motocross Helmets Please.

  1. As title suggests, motocross gear is out with my usual scope of expertise.
Need one, usual style - full face with skip, for a 12 year old lad that is of good enough quality that we can trust not to fall to bits if he takes a tumble.
He’s seen one called a Raven Airborne Split that’s about £75. Seems a little cheap to me but I’ve nothing to base that on apart from the road lids I used to retail.
Anyone got experience or recommendations that could point me in the right direction?

    thanks in advance.

  2. Just my opinion, cheap end of the market using a thermoplastic shell. Most proper competition helmets are multi fibre or carbon and expensive. Airoh offer a mid range product but I’ve not been able to find what testing standards they confirm to. Raven conform to the basic ECE22.05 used by helmet manufacturers selling entry level helmets in the European market place. Andy

  3. Yeah. Kinda what I expected. Thanks Andy.
I’ll check out some Airoh lids and see what they’ve got.
If it was a road/race lid, I’d be in my element. Having never really done motocross, I’m out my depth a little.

  4. Same is true no matter what the helmet. Get the best you can afford but take time to delve a little into the background. Test standards vary, ECE22.5 and the US, DOT are the basic, Sharp and the US, Snell are better and IMO, the latest attempt by the FIM to bring the best of the standards out there together, if it finally gets into the public domain, will be best. 5. Look up @dirtbikexpress.co.uk
They have most of the brand names.

I use a Bell from them. Have a Fox and some other brand, Bell, Arai, shoei etc etc all good

  6. Good advice guys, thanks.

  7. The only thing with mx is to get the cheapest with the relevant safety standards and quality reputation for build, which I wouldn’t say for road helmets, because they will get so grubby and wet that the liners are ruined long before the shell, on top of that crashes and stone chips are savage, only the very flush are running shoei etc

  8. absolutely spot on, I spent nearly £400 on an Airoh, one good roosting and a stone chip the size of a 10 pence coin on the chin piece. The same would have happened to a £100 lid but then I could afford another. Oh and have you seen the price of higher branded peaks? Snap a peak and your looking at £50 plus.

  9. If you're worried about chipping a lid at mx you're probably in the wrong sport :joy:

  10. Correct fit is more important than Brand.

  12. Buy the best you can afford.

all the mx and enduro I’ve done has involved smashing myself in to trees frequently. It’s worth it.

  13. How do you find that for ventilation? I want something like this for my new V4 Multi as the aerodynamics of the bike are so good there isn't much airflow through the helmet and it all gets pretty warm inside the helmet.

  14. I bought it for a trip in the Himalayas next year, but also use it for KTM Experience training. Everything gets a bit hot and sweaty on the dirt.....Hoping the flip up lid and eye visor will work on Indian unmade roads.....Not sure what the airflow is like on a Royal Enfield.

Most importantly though, I made a similar post request and followed the DF guru advice.

  15. Recommend using a dirt bike helmet with a visor due to its function. It offers rider protection for your face from all types of flying objects, debris, and weather extremes encountered during the activity.

  16. To be honest most of all the above is correct. Usual stuff in fitment being so important. Dirtbikeexpress wont sell you a duff quality lid so if it fits it will be ok .
But on a side issue things like boots are so so important, almost more than a lid on MX bikes.
Get on ebay and find a names brand of boot . Secondhand is great as most are indestructible and at the age of rider you are looking at will be for sale due to being outgrown.
    Dont buy new basically.
