I thought I had solved the issue with a new battery I installed a month ago. but the issue is still there the HYM (14) still misbehaves and occasionally (but more and more frequently) starting it up is an issue and takes several seconds. this in turn has the effects of discharging the battery... I read somewhere it was a known issue about the starter motors of the early 821s, which Ducati reluctantly swapped for new ones. the bike then runs fine once the engine is running (no stalling at all). I recently asked the dealer to look at it when they did the service, but, as always, they didn't really do much. for some reason I get a sense that they hide behind the easy line:" oh you need to ride it more sir..." any advice? the issue is most apparent when trying to start the bike after it warmed up (counter-intuitively). when I fire it up in the morning most of the time it starts ok. if I ride, say, 10 minutes, stop and then try to restart it then it's a mess.
A cable kit will always help because less resistance in the starting circuit means more current left over for the ignition circuit. Have you tried pulling the plugs to determine how rich or weak your mixture is? While you're pulling plugs, how abut replacing them??
I have a vague recollection of there being a software update along the line somewhere that at least in part was related to starting? My 13 HYM has been updated more than once since I got it, is your software up to date?
not sure, but I assume official dealers will always do it as part of an annual service (which has just been done)?
Nearly all the posts I've read about this resulted in the starter motor needing to be replaced. I read on a post recently that sometime in the last year ducati switched to a different starter motor model.
Being a 2026 bike of like to think mine already had the new type. Mine doesn't play up every time so I'll see what my dealer says.
Just heard back from mine, They seem to to think it was a faulty sensor, that affects the flow of petrol vs air. Lambda sensor, I'll let you know if it solves the problem!
My 13 plate has started having trouble when trying to start Not all the time But still got warranty from the dealer when bought last year Is it worth contacting them? Do you think they would cover this?
just wanted to give everyone an update. got my bike back after they (finally) replaced the starter under warranty. problem solved!!! starts like a breeze in half a second. it's clear now how bad the previous starter was. this one is quite silent and starts the bike OK but boy did it take ages to convince Ducati to replace it.....
Pisquano - What year is your hyper? Im pretty sure ducati wont replace the starter on a bike that is no longer under warranty.
