Age old question, which newbie Ducati?

Discussion in 'Newbies Hangout' started by Wesley, Jul 25, 2012.

  1. Not only a newbie to Ducati but to big bikes also. Experienced car driver, 125cc some years ago, just onto Direct Access for bigger bike. Will commute (10-15 miles), have fun on weekends, and am drawn to the 848 streetfighter- enough go to keep me excited for years but not hardcore sports position (much as I'd love an 848 evo!)
Realise Street Triple may be best riding option, but am drawn irreversibly to the Ducati design, looks and ethos. Any advice? SF too mad to start with? (I'm 43 so pretty sensible on the road). I guess plan B would be Monster but will I be trading in too soon??
    Cheers, Wesley

  2. I have riden both the 848SF and Monster(s) and the Monster would be the better commuter IMHO, not that I commute however, it's just a more relaxed ride. Whether the 848SF would be too much as a first bike is difficult to say, it depends upon you really. Either would seem pretty damned quick compared to a 125 or 99.9% of cars on the road.

Best bet is to try before you buy. Enjoy.

I am sure you would be happy with either.

  3. Welcome, I'm going to say Monster, but I'm biased

  4. Hi and welcome. You really need to do a few test rides to see what suits you best, its different strokes for different folks.

  5. Mate did exactly same, went for a triumph of 696 monster, tried the M1100s and got his wallet out ;)

He's done probably 10k miles in the last 3 years he's owned it (most in first 2 years as I've been off a road bike for most of the last so not dragging him o everywhere!!) and still loves it

  6. I would recommend getting something a little less powerful for a start. Even if it's only for 6 months. You'll probably have much more fun and less stress  And if you buy second hand you won't lose much when you'll decide to get the 848SF few months later.
Test ride them both and see which one is more confidence inspiring.

  7. I only passed test last summer, started on a triumph bonnie the Just bought a new 1100 EVO this year! Great bike.

  8. Many thanks to all. Test rides booked for August

  9. I have the SF848 and came from a Monster 796 before that. The SF848 I would say is a pretty good option, it's pretty comfortable, looks killer of course and pretty easy to ride, not stupid fast but plenty and if you are sensible is a good choice. For commuting and to make life easier have a better clutch slave fitted as the standard pull might prove hard work in traffic.

  10. The Monster is timeless, the 848 looks cutting edge and awesome. I'm glad, but also saddened, that I dont have to make this kind of decision
