Air filter change guide

  1. Thought I'd take a few snaps whilst swapping air filters, hopefully may be of use to someone.

ok, pretty straight forward job, basic tools needed, if you've never had your bike fairings off I'd say it's about an hours work with a cup of coffe and fag break included.

unlike many bikes, the tank doesn't need to come off for this one.

first off, nice clean area required

then remove side panel then both the air tube covers (under the handle bars)

Next up is the black plastic shroud under the headlight, this needs to go

next the headlight fairing needs to come off...... But I've been told it's possible to change a filter without having to take it off. If you do it this way your a better man than I, you'd have to bend the fairing out the way........ Fuck that.
firstly remove both mirrors, it's just a bolt and pop them out. There are a few bolts holding it on, when they are all undone it'll come off dead easy, so worth checking there all out, bottom pic shows a hidden one.

you should end up with a pile of bits like so, for obvious reasons get them up out the way.

ok, next up remove the air tube, the filter will slide out easy, replace filter and refit parts in reverse order.

    hope that helps someone

  2. I simply removed my right hand fairing Ross. Long reach allen key and slid the filter out. I think you have gone "operation overkill"?

  3. Worth mentioning too that the stock filters make a very poor seal with the tubes and a large part of the air drawn in misses it altogether. Have a wipe around inside the airbox and see how dirty it is and you will see what i mean.

The tip i got was to either liberaly apply grease to the ends or wrap a bit of sticky back window insulation on each end to seal it better. I was shocked at how bad the seal was and the amount of grit and dirt inside my airbox.

  4. I've used a jhp filter, seems quite nice and a couple of mm longer than the one I pulled out.

like I said, I know it can be done with the nose fairing on, but I'd rather not risk tweaking it for the sake of 15mins work..... Plus you still need to get the air tube off, easier with the nose off IMO

  5. Yeah, fair enough Ross. Its not easy with just the side fairing off as you say, the air tubes are a pain.
