Airbox Restriction?

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by richgilb, Nov 8, 2015.

  1. Is there any power to be gained from opening the air box or putting filters on either the carby or ie bike?

I have an IE with an 1100 Evo motor mated to the 900 box and remapped to add to my confusion about what to do!

  2. Several different options, personally I would remove the trumpets in the first instance. Dont cut your lid unless you really have to as they fetch a premium now due to everybody hacking away at them. So you can easily return to standard should you wish to sell bike in the future. The trumpets restrict the flow the most.

  3. And what about power gain?

  4. You will have increased aiflow, if you have it remapped and more open pipes then it makes sense to try and improve air flow, as regards gains, when I opened the box on mine which as you know is a carby, it definately felt a little crisper on the throttle. Itll not give you massive gains, its a more subtle mod but essential if you have improved everything else mentioned.

As I am fitting keihins and Silmoto exhausts if I kept the standard airbox setup it would kinda defeat the purpose as those trumpets really restrict the suction of air. Plus it makes an awesome noise if you open up the breathing

  5. Interesting. I spoke to a Ducati pipe vender and he says the down pipe gain is only there on the IE bikes.

Would like to know what happens in yours
