Aldi Action Cam

  1. Anyone else bought one? https://www.aldi.co.uk/national-geographic-action-camera/p/093538037880900
I have not had chance to try it due to missing summer two weeks ago. Just wondering where to mount it on the bike now. I don't fancy sticking it on my lid.
Its 1080p, battery runtime 70mins and water resistant to 30 metres. It has a built in microphone that may be an issue as it has to be mounted on the bike in the waterproof case. It comes with a spare back for the waterproof case so may drill some holes in it. The battery is removable unlike other budget cameras. The fittings look like they may be compatible with the go-pro mounts and there are plenty to choose from in the box.

  2. The thing that these cheapo action cams often lack is a decent processor. It all looks great for the kids to play around in the garden with, but then you mount it on a bike and travel at more than 20 mph and the results are disappointing.
I assume that the SBK in your avatar is yours, why did you not buy a cheap Chinese motorbike? The same goes for an action cam, spend a bit more and buy something that will do the job well.

  3. Yep, it's notable that I haven't seen one that'll do 60FPS in FHD, yet the later GoPros can do 120FPS at FHD.

  4. I'm still looking for one that doesn't produce endlessly dull footage of me trundling around like a learner, while vibrating enough to make the viewer motion sick. After the first couple of hours of playback my audience lose interest too... even with Jean Michael Jarre soundtrack and flaming scene transitions.

  5. Not the camera that produces dull footage, but the person who does the editing. If you produce a film of you doing a 30 minute ride around Lincolnshire then no-one is going to want to watch it. If you produce some 30 second clips taken from different angles and in different places then it will be a whole lot more interesting.

  6. Are you sure? The ride takes in a number of mini-roundabouts, and if you look closely there's a sign with a hilarious misuse of an apostrophe at 23"39'... I assumed it was boring for my audience as I was not shooting in a high enough frame rate or my transitions were not jazzy enough.
