Alternative For Cast Iron Brembo

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by Jakepeewee, Jul 4, 2023.

  1. Hi all,

Just found out that the cast iron rotors of my 851SP3 are at the service limit (4.5 mm).
Brembo don't make these anymore, so what to do?

I am considering two options right now.

Prefered option: Braketech AXIS IRON RACE SERIES
Cast iron which I was used to (and liked very much with the Brembo Racing RC Carbon 07BB15RC pads)

Problem is I can't find a European retailer who sells Braketech. Shipping from the US and the import tax will make this the more expensive option (780 USD + shipping + import tax etc)

Fall back option: BREMBO HP T-DRIVE DISK KIT
the stainless steel alternative from brembo, approx 700 euro

Was wondering what your experience is with either of these rotors for track use, what would you recommend and why?
And doesn anybody know how to buy the Braketech within the European zone?

    Hoping for some input, TIA,
    Jacco

  2. I'd go brembo hpk , I did on all my bikes tbh.

The 996sps has them on as they look very similar to the original iron ones

  3. I’d go brembo HPK/Serie Oro, they are fantastic and will be less maintenance and hassle

  4. Would 996 SPS cast iron discs fit?

  5. There is a guy( in New Zealand I think?) who has made copies of the aluminium carries for fully floaters. I have a set in loft for my superlight, which at 28k need doing.
I'll try to dig link up on Facebook pages.

  6. SRM Performance Products, New Zealand.
Think he dose aluminium carriers & discs, better than original quality at a reasonable price. You may have to go on Facebook to find company.

  7. I think the SPS rotors are the same, so they should fit.

  8. I also have an extra set of carriers. But it's the discs themselves that are at end of life with 4.5mm thickness :-(

  9. when I look at pictures there's a difference between 996SPS and 916SPS. The cast iron rotors fitted to the 916SPS look the same as on my SP3 and I think are identical.

  10. Here they are. USED. 320mm. I will try and measure thickness.

  11. Think he machines discs as well as carriers.

  13. I'm going to stick my neck out here ...... and I anticipate getting plenty of flack for it ..... :D

That 4.5mm is pretty much a made-up number , and it errs very much on the side of " safety " ,
but it certainly works nicely for putting fear into bikers , and even more for the sellers of new rotors .
[ did I mention that bacteria don't exist ? ...... they were invented by the makers of cleaning products ]

Your disks look to be in good condition ..... no deep scoring , and much more importantly ,
no visible ridge on the outer rim of the disk .

PS - if you are going to be chucking them in the bin , please chuck them this way .....

  14. Mine look like 4-5mm.
If that is insufficient for OP, then @oldtech they can be yours for a modest sum + P&P or delivered if you London & SW.

  15. The spec for the 996R & 998R is 4.5mm with a minimum thickness of 4,00mm

  16. 4.5mm minimum would imply an original thickness of 5.00mm which seems extremely thick (and heavy).

  17. I think the 996R&998R have different discs than the 996SPS. Not interchangable (offset perhaps?).
Cast Iron discs (non ductile) are brittle, you do take a risk when they're on the limit. People died on track because of failed cast irons discs. I'd rather not take the risk especially since I plan to track and probably race my bike next year. Discs on my bike are 4.5mm thickness and I do feel a ridge on the outer edge. Not sure about the original thickness, could be 5 mm but I did see NOS ones that were 5.5mm (were marked that way).

Paul, thanks for the offer but your discs have the same thickness as my current discs so purchasing these makes no sense (for me).

  18. Oirginal thickness of 5mm is actually not much at all. The Brembo HP T-DRIVE DISK KIT f.e. has 5.5 mm discs, I think the BrakeTech Axis also 5.5 mm

  19. Yes indeed .....I was hinting at similar reasoning .

I probably didn't make my opinion clear enough though .....
.... but there's nothing new with that !

    :)

  20. I didn't know that. The current stainless discs are onl
You are correct. I see that for the Panigale models and 1089/1198/848 models the discs are 5.00mm although many other models use thinner 4.5mm discs, all off them in stainless steel which doesn't have the same fracture risk.
