Alternative for water temp sensor on ST2

  1. Hi,I have a duff water temperature sensor on my ST2. Ducati want a lot of money for a replacement at £60.46. It looks like a common auto part but with only the makers name on it I cant pick up any cross references. My guess is the same part is used in a fiat and can be had from Europarts for a lot less. Does anyone have any idea about possible substitutes?

  2. Yes, it's the same part from the Fiat Mk2 Punto 8V 1.2 engine. Info here. If you look at the Data Sheet you will see that there are 2 versions, the WTS05 has a long probe and the WTS09 a short one. They should both fit but I had to drill out the inner hole in the housing on the ST4s by about 1/2 a millimetre to take a WTS05 sensor. You should be able to get one from a motor factor for tenner or so.

  3. Thanks Derek,

Good result. Europarts have the WTS05 on the shelf for £13.26 delivered. It seems the shorter version is discontinued.

Thanks a lot I shall back enjoying the ride at the weekend, thanks to your help.

  4. Blast from the past but Derek do you know what is the thread size for a Ducati water sensor?
Would one of these two fit?

Am I correct to assume that all sensors measure temperature differently as in I could not just wire in Ducati sensor to koso dash and get a correct read out?

Another question have you seen a temp sensor that I could fit in to a ST2 head that would be a on/off type to get fans connected to it?

  5. For the latter you would need a Fan Temperature Switch. You would need to source one for the temperature range you would want it to operate at.

  6. The thread size is M12 x 1.5mm pitch.

Different sensors may have not have the same resistence at a given temperature. Some are Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) and others are Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC). IN other words the resistance can drop with temperature or rise with temperature, depending on which type.

As Chris says you'd need a temperature switch to operate the fan. These were fitted to the 748 and 9** series but have a bigger diameter. I guess you could get an adaptor made to suit.
