Alternative To Polished Pipes

  1. Call me crazy but I don't like the polished chrome look on motorbike pipes. Looks great on classic scooters though.

What alternatives are there? Is there a black paint that will hold up to the heat, or is that powder coating?

    Thanks.

  2. Thanks mate, that looks just the ticket. Have you had it done? Any idea of cost?

  3. Bit late

Got mine coated at Camcoat in Warrington, I think quite a few on here have gone that route

  4. That look very nice OJ. I like the idea of a ceramic coating on my Monster's pipes and have just been quoted £354 plus shipping and VAT by Zircotec, seems a lot as that would come to about £450. A company called Performance 1 Coatings at Didcot has a web site that states from £120 for a 2 into 1 motorcycle exhaust, has anyone used them or heard if they are any good?

  5. 2015-12-07_22.02.40[1].jpg Bit of advice needed on the exhaust coating front please! I've stripped the exhaust from the bike and come to the flappy valve thing, it looks as though it is fairly straight forward to bend back the locking tab, undo the nut, and and remove the spring and actuating cam but I've been caught out but wound up springs that can be real sods to get back on. Has anyone taken these apart and is it difficult to get back on or should I leave it in place and have it masked off?

  6. Has anyone tried the Cermakrome finish? Camcoat offer it on their website but in their pictures it just looks like aluminium paint.
Found this thread on Ducati.MS Cermakrome and Jet-Hot coated SF1098 exhaust - Ducati.ms - The Ultimate Ducati Forum

Here it looks like polished alluminium which I prefer to over-shiny polished stainless, and never discolours. Apparently.
    I could go for that.

I'd have to clean off all the extraneous bracketry first though to get the best from it and I might even change to the cleaner, snakier pipe with the full Termi system. (Got slip-ons on the stock pipe now).

  7. Zircotec pro coating on my old SF - expensive but a great product

  8. How durable are these coatings? Do they still look good after 2-3k miles?

  9. I just don't think polished suits sports bike's at all. Vespa's, Lambretta's, Triumph's and Harley's then great, but not a sports bike. Only my opinion though.

  10. And white wheels can f*** off too! :)

  14. Ok only my personal experience YMMV

When I sent the pipes to Camcoat I just left the valve and springs in place, did not seem to present any problem to Camcoat, this was for a 1098, standard pipes. I also sent down the smaller of the 2 exhaust heat shields which had discolored and gone grey. They done that as well and its not faded either.

Cermakrome, gives a silver/grey/blue sort of appearance and quite a matt finish

Here on a Guzzi's pipes which are Stainless, personally not my cup of tea at all. I got the pipes redone black, an expensive mistake. You can see the difference quite starkly compared with the uncoated SS silencers

I've got at 3-4k on them I don't do a high mileage, pipes are pretty much like new and only require washing, obviously like all coatings it will chip and wear, but IMHO surprisingly durable.

Polishing is a thing of the past as are stained pipes.

  15. I got my Termis Black ceramic coated....wicked.

  16. Hmm. I see what you're saying. They don't really look like polished alloy. I guess it might suit some bikes but certainly not a mostly black engined Streetfighter.
Having the heat shields done is a good call. I don't want to add too much more carbon to mine. I think you can overdue it. The small shield behind the rear pot is the one that needs attention most. Gets very hot and goes bluey purple and looks out of place.
The main shield behind the pegs gets a lot of foot contact. Will the camcoat be tough enough to withstand scratching from boots?

  17. Hi Gimlet

Can't say for sure, but bearing in mind all the stone chips the pipes have had thrown at them and not been seriously marked, it might work.

If I was going that route I think I'd have a go at measuring the large heat shield temp and if it does not get too hot look at a powder coat as a possibility too.

You can see the Guzz has pc'd rockers and they have been fine despite getting pretty toasty

  18. Just noticed that pic you threw up @Gimlet has the newer version of the QD cans, I've got the previous iteration which are nice but these look even better to my eye damm you :Arghh:

  19. Yes not a bad idea to check the temp. I going to have the silver handlebars painted/stoved/coated so they match the sort of graphite black finish of the frame. It would be nice if the hear shields could be done to match.

On the QD's, are they the new ones? That thread is from 2012. American forum too. Do they get the same ones over there?
Must admit, though I'm not entirely sure about underseat cans on the SF, (I quite like the to see the clean lines of the tail piece) they do look good, as good as Termis.
Edit: actually saying that, your underseats really do work because your pipes, cans and tail piece all match. You're colour coordinated. :)
