Alternator Outrigger Bearing Gone?

  1. Sooo....following last years scary 900SS-oil-all-over-the-back-wheel-at-90-on-the-A1 moment,I've finally dragged the pile of shite from the back of the barn to investigate the issue.
Fairing removed,I find only two bolts holding the alternator cover on,both loose, and oil obviously everywhere
Add a few more bolts to the cover and tighten/top up the oil, fire the bugger up from a truck battery and she runs sweet with no untoward knocking noises.Bullet dodged,eh?
But,within seconds all the alt.cover bolts are visibly coming undone evidenced by the amount of oil rapidly filling my carefully positioned catch can.
Does this sound like the outrigger bearing is shot?
I don't possess,(but have ordered),a cover puller,to investigate, but if this sounds like the problem I'll take a chance and order the new bearing.(St Neots M/Cycles are only up the road they might have one in stock if I'm lucky)
I was hoping to thrash the bastad to Towcester on Sunday,so early advice will be appreciated

  2. For the cost of a new bearing it has to be worth a shot.........

A cover puller is easy enough to make............although if the bolts are that loose, so is the cover; therefore do you actually need a puller?

  3. I had a go at removing it but it didn't just come away so rather than bugger it up I bought the puller.(I have fists made of pure ham on occasion...).
Are the outrigger bearings the same on all 900's or do I have to get at it and identify it do you reckon?

  4. Shouldn't need a puller? Just tap it all the way round with a rubber mallet (Gently tap) and if you pull at the same time it will come away nicely :)

  5. I'd second that as being a main bearing, if it is loosening the case bolts you might count yourself as "lucky" as usually the case suffers hairline cracks which allow oil to escape, it might explain your oil on the back wheel.

I've had two of these go on 748's both main bearing problems and both destroyed their alternator cases. Any play in the main bearing means it has almost certainly gone.

  6. just check your engine mounts especially the 2 fronts,my old 750ss lost one of the fronts bolts an it unscrewed all the screws in the clutch case.

  7. shan't be bringing it to the SS on Sunday then, the 750 it will have to be...thanks to all, investigations will continue...

  8. I had one let go on me whilst on a hot lap of Cadwell last year. As mentioned previously, it knackered the alternator casing and destroyed the outrigger bearing. Haven't had the courage to split the cases and see the extent of the damage yet.
