Aluminium Swing Arm Welding - Recommendation Request

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by gaz92, Jun 12, 2012.

  1. Has anyone had any welding done on aluminium bits and can anyone recommend any people or companies - preferably in the Sheffield / Doncaster / Worksop Area but will travel.

As part of my reno' the swing arm has a groove in it made by what I presume was a loose rear sprocket nut (previous owner), so make sure your nuts are tight boys and girls.

    Cheers,

    Gaz.

  2. Little bit further a field, but, Metmachex at Somercotes in Derbyshire, a few mile off J28 M1. They set up in the 80's making ally swing arms, they know what they are doing.

  3. Alos in Derby area - Spondon Engineering

  4. Thanks guys, had a reply from Metmachex seems reasonable £40 - will give Spondon ago.

    Cheers.

    Gaz.

  5. Whilst your playing with the swingarm, check the pinch bolts ... on some early bikes they were made out of what must've been metal coloured chalk and snap when tightened, and the early pivot bolts weren't held by a circlip either

Been there, done that, got the skidmarked undies to prove it

  6. Cheers will check the bolts. It's a bit since I took it apart but yes I do seem to remember the pivot bolt (presume you mean the shaft) did NOT have anything holding it in) apart from the clamping bolts. Thought at the time it was a bit strange.

    Thanks,

    Gaz.

  7. If not already sorted try GIA engineering in stapleford notts, ex spondon welder, very good job on mine so well recommended, mention me!

  8. I did ring GIA up a bit ago and had them on my short list so will give them another ring - cheers spike
