Is it possible on a 1098S, Moto Rapido just told me the front sprocket is a 14 toother, I want to swap that for a 15 toother. Is it possible to change over without removing the chain? Or am I being really thick?
Just done a front sprocket (15T)change on the multi....I know its not the same but it was quite tight ..space wise, took the rear sprocket(renthal quick change) off to allow me to move chain sideways slightly in order to get the sprocket off the shaft. Andy
Thats good to know, both my bikes have been fitted with the renthal carrier. Job will be an easy one then Only thing is, I still dont that a 1098 paddock stand for the rear axel...
If needed you can borrow my Harris one to get the job done. Least I can do for trying to deafen you at Ride-in
I would, but this won't be possible until the end of April... So many things to spend money on! Need to become a banker... Note to self, buy a calculator and a good suit. You would be a legend if this is possible
It can be done on a 916, remove the rear sprocket/carrier so that the chain is loose and not held in line and there's (just) enough room to get the front sprocket with cahin attached off/on. Don't know on a 1098 but would guess it is possible unless the swingarm design doesn't give you the lateral chain movement. BTW you don't want it on a conventional paddock stand as you can't get the rear sprocket carrier off when on the stand, you don't need to remove the wheel so can be done on the side stand.
Thankfully mate, I have the renthal carrier, which allows taking the rear sprocket off from the carrier, allowing it to stay on the paddock stand.
Doodle, you free next weekend mate? If I can get the sprocket for that weekend, I might pop round then, also with a ton of chain cleaner/lube, it's a bloody nightmare cleaning/lubing atm, as I have to roll the bike, do one section, rinse and repeat. 15 min job takes me a hour now! Wish I could buy a slip on/extra for my Ducati paddock stand for the 748. Would make life easier.
Yes, I should be about mate. Garage is a bit of a warzone currently (due a tidy up over Easter) but there'll be enough space to get the job done.
Doodle mate, this won't be needed now. Last night I won a bid for a rear stand for a 1098 at a total of 30 quid! Get involved eh?
freshage . why would you want to change from a 14 tooth to a 15 tooth sprocket most want a 14 tooth sprocket as it makes the bike much more rider friendly in traffic and improves acceleration with only a few mph loss at top end that you will never miss. I have never been a great believer in going down one tooth on the front to 14 but have always gone up on the rear by up to 7 teeth to achieve the same. Some say the front is easier. Probably rightly.
I was told different by the guys at Moto Rapido, that going back up to 15 on the front will iron out the awful low rev chugging. And before you say it's a Ducati thing, trust me, the 748 did it a little, the 1098S does it so badly, it's almost unbareable. Will do mate, cheers
Doubt that it will make it better. A bigger front sprocket will make it faster so the low rev chugging will be worse as the revs will remain the same but you will be trying harder to make it go slower.
That's the first time i've heard that advise, dropping one at the front is a very cheap and popular mod that loads of people do on the 848, for all the reasons Ducati2242 says. I would bet if asked, there is more 848's running 14t front than 15t. Anth
