I’m looking to change my fork set up on a 2012 monster 796. My original plan was to get the Andreani kit but even with doing it myself it’s going to be just over £700. I’m mainly a road rider with plans to do my first casual track day this year. I’m no professional but definitely a ‘spirited’ rider but I’m not sure if the cartridge kit will be more than I actually need and maybe some new springs and oil will be okay for my ability. Hoping someone can give some advice on what route I should take? cheers
I used a pair of springs from these people, https://www.wilbers.de/shop/en/Motorcycle/Ducati/Monster-796-M5/?year=2012 on a Diavel with a change of oil viscosity, went from 7.5 weight to 5 weight. Andy
I've got a k tech piston kit in my track bike, perfect for what I need, cartridge kit is prob over kill.
Different bike although it took time to set up the suspension. Took lots of little changes to find the sweet spot but well worth the effort. Andy
I put an Andreani cartridge kit in my Gen 1 SDR1290, as the WP forks were dreadful. They are really good value for money for what they cost compared to Ohlins, K Tech etc. I'm amazed they are so expensive now, think I paid about £500 3 years ago. I tried fitting better springs and heavier oil as a first attempt to improve the shite stock set up but didn't really improve it, hence getting a cartridge kit. With the KTM forks, I struggled to polish a turd, Ducati might have a better starting point
Bear in mind the 796 only has damping in one fork leg. They really went for the bargain bucket from Showa. That means that fitting a cartridge kit will most likely require some machining of one if not both fork legs. I fitted 848 stanchions and internals to my 696 outer tubes. Not straight forward but a really good upgrade. If you wanted to try just springs, the 848/1098 springs are linear instead of progressive which I find much better. Couple that with a linear spring at the back and it may get you somewhere. I did also raise rear ride height via a new clevis/shim system I made. Gives the bike better turn in.
Here is what I did. https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/monster-696-suspension-in-general-and-how-to-improve-it.96568/
