  1. Need some advice on a home system

  2. Following our recent burglary,(more of which later as the old Bill don't think it was as straghtforward as it seemed),I'm in the process of fitting one of these:
    www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181075180165?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649:

Just got to wire it up now and then we'll see.
If this particular system floats your boat though, make the dude an offer.I paid £145.99.
And note that the HDD is not supplied,(I bought a 2tb drive from ebuyer for c£70)
You'll need a monitor as well,or wire it into the back of your TV if it has the correct port

  3. There has been a spate of burglary's around our way earlier this week with the closest being 2 doors away. She caught them in her house at 4am!

Anyway I did my research and bought Wireless IP Cams Wansview CCTV Wireless WIFI Outdoor IP Camera H.264 HD 720P IR-CUT TF card 36Led | eBay

I didn't want DVR boxes and farting around with routing cables all over the gaff. All I do is pair with my router and control/view via a browser It records to a internal SD card when movement is detected plus send an email alert and a still image to an FTP server or in this case I'll point it towards my unused Skydrive

  4. Nice one,but you still have to route a power cable yes?
I'm running it all into a hidden DVR,then putting on the wi-fi with a simple home plug.
Simple enough if a bit of a faff ,got all access points covered, plus the Gatekeepers Cottage/Moat/Private yacht mooring etc etc...LOL!

  5. do you have to put warning signs up saying that you are recording?

  6. No.You can record anything on your own property, including public areas outside the property,i,e.roads/footpaths,if you are recording for the purpose of preventing or recording a criminal act.
If you record your neighbours garden though, you have to inform them, keep records of any recordings and allow them to view them,(or tell them how to obtain copies of the recording).
Bit of a minefield actually, loads of different interpretations of the Laws, best thing only record your own property or public areas adjoining the boundaries of your own property.
Discovered one thing, slightly off-topic:if you use anti-burglar paint,(anti-climb/anti-vandal whatever) on your own fences/walls then you have to put up warning signs....

  7. Very true, for private use there is not much you need to do, in short if you can see it with the naked eye then you can record it (audio is a slightly more complex matter), and that's even if the camera over looks a garden etc, if it looks through a window that's a different matter and should be masked out with DVR or camera masking. If you wish to stream video to your phone etc and you don't have a static IP address you can use a port forwarding service like Dyndns.com cost 25 dollars a year now but can be setup so your router automatically updates Dyndns with your IP address and converts it to a simple domain name of your choice like mycctv.org. You can then use that address to point your CCTV app to your DVR.

A side line of mine is CCTV systems using PTZ, Fixed, Thermal Image (type 1 and 2) and much more... even remote monitoring of multiple locations on one screen PC, tablet or smart phone.... it's a bit of a hobby of mine :)
